Rock cartwright is here to try to replace costanzo on special teams. Costanzo was a linebacker. So you could say we'll have one less LB and one more RB than usual dedicated just to ST.No big deal. I think Parys is headed out the door as soon as Fleming proves he can be a decent backup so it all evens out.

Then we presumably cut dixon, but the competition at RB is so intense that this may only end up happening if Jacobs starts playing special teams(why not?). When you're like the 4th best rb you better play special teams...

Why does everyone want to kick Haralson to the curb? Lol. Aldon right now is pass rush specialist, its no sure thing he turns out to be an every down backer. With 2 rookies as backups I'm not so sure we can afford to just cut him.

Gore, James, Hunter and Miller are definite locks. Cartwright and Jacobs were brought in for specific roles, so as long as they meet Balke and Harbaugh's expectations they should make the team. Dixon's only shot is on ST.
Coach might be evolving his plays, before it was stacks of TEs now comes the stacks of RBs in similar formations. . . . its been a long day . . . . .
jacobs might as well start learning the te postion.
Yes, I think they keep four. Don't think they would have signed Jacobs if they did not see a use for him. The trick during camp will be to hedge against injury at each posiiton. So players who have flexibility will have an edge at many positions and RBs can usually be useful on STs.

For those who didn't like the James pick--go back and check his college stats. They aren't just good they are eye popping--many 200+ games. He will add an element of excitement the niners have lacked. As much as I like Hunter, he is more a ball control type all-purpose back, James is an explosion waiting to happen.

With the addition of James and Jenkins I think Ginn may be the odd man out. They may be able to replace him on ST and at WR/RB (more effective on the reverse than as a receiver). Would hate to see this as he was so dependable and that is hard to find but..such is life!

agree...its either Dixon or Jacob, but i'm leaning towards Dixon being out
We'll carry at least five. (Gore, Miller, Hunter, James & Jacobs).

I believe a ninth OL, Dixon, Cartwright and Williams will be fighting for the last one or two offensive roster spots. Could be up to six RB's.
Jacobs will not be cut, the team will carry 4 RB, possibly 5. However it is llike when the niners carried 4 TE's, Jennings was listed as a TE but was a LS.

Cartwright- returning kicks
Gore- Pounder
Hunter- change of pace
James- improved Hunter
Jacobs- will be used on ST's, short yardage, and maybe to relieve gore so he can be fresh in December, a month where Gore is absent.

Yeah, I think it would be extremely stupid to get rid of Haralson when he's been a solid, but not remarkable starter for us the past couple years opposite Manny Lawson and now Ahmad Brooks. He was, after all, a starter last year on one of the best defenses of all time.

People seem to forget how quickly fortunes change when injuries happen. Haralson would probably be quite in demand if he was a free agent. As things stand, he would make an excellent backup player.
