Am really glad you like the pick, OTC...
I know some people will question it and go back to the senior bowl and point to isolated incidences where he was beat, but the fact of the matter is that those are not indicative of Looney's true ability in reality, and his larger body of work shows he is a very able OL who has coachable flaws that I believe our team can fix.
In college, Looney dominated when he was able to get the first punch on the DL coming at him, utilizing his power. The problems came when quicker DL could evade that punch, or he faced a DL more powerful than him that he couldn't contain. Looney can't solely rely on his power punch in the NFL and needs more work to master all the other techniques he will need to be successful. Until then, he will be just a good run blocker and an average pass-blocker.
I believe Baalke said he will compete primarily to backup all the interior OG spots and to possibly start at RG, but from the sound of it, it doesn't seem he's expected to start. I really like Kilgore and think he's going to lock down the OG position for years to come if he beats out Looney in the pre-season. I think Kilgore is a better player and if Looney can't beat him now, I'm not sure he'll ever win the spot.

Some other bits of info on looney that I like.....
78 knockdowns as a senior.....I LOVE IT!
He was playing center at the senior bowl before he got hurt. So he's versatile. He can battle Kilgore for backup center and starting guard, in a few years kilgore probably moves to center.
He worked out with Jeremy Newberry for a week and Newberry schooled him on the West Coast offense. I think that went a long way with Harbaugh who said he liked talking Football with Looney the best out of our draftees.

i read that in the paper today as well
However, what concerns me is that he has a foot injury and he has been seeing the same doctor Stephen Curry does. We need to get him some better medical attention asap

What are you talking about? Many of the analysts that I have listened to, including Kiper and McShay, say that Looney was projected to be a 2nd round pick until the injury at the Senior Bowl.

A projected 2nd round pick!!!! Well why didn't you say so. With all the actual 1st round picks at OL that have failed us, its about time we start to shift our expectations the other way

I have noticed we love picking up guys who didn't perform up to normal ability due to injury: Aldon, Looney, Owusu, Boone (other issues),..I know there's more but it seems like we use guys falling down in life to get better bargain for them in the draft.

Considering he went to Wake Forest he's obviously no dummy either.

I think it also hooks the draftee into thinking we were the only team that wanted him and was willing to work with him to try and improve his life, not only his game. Players are more committed to the team.

Obviously, a team with 3 first rounders on its OL and sorely lacking playmakers on offense, saw more pressing needs than adding another 1st round OL.
Looney was considered the 4th OG in the draft by many and can also be shifted to C.

Yup. Also, "character" issues have allowed us to snap up some steals. Tarell Brown had legal issues while at Texas that caused him to fall from a 2/3 round grade to the 5th. Bowman also "character" issues that caused him to fall into the late 3rd.
