Actually lots of people were disgruntled with him as fans. But after 95' things changed a bit. I was very young and just missed out on the Montana era, Always been a huge Young fan. I think I truly started watching in the 90 season, I think Jerry Rice held out through training camp that year. Very peculiar, I was 6 going on 7 and nobody in my family watched football, they still really dont but I watched every Sunday and often times watch ESPN hoping for new highlights when the Niners game weren't aired in Hawaii.

So you got there just as they were transitioning. howd you get into football with such little influence? Or were the niners that big in hawaii?

I understand the love for Joe though. Ive seen enough games of his to just be wowed. Lionel Messi reminds me of Montana. Guy who doesnt look like much, quiet but when he touches the ball its just magic.

But Young, man, that guy was made to be an NFL QB. I can see why we were so proud.

You know I never thought of the comparison of Messi to Montana but it kinda works. Other traits that they share are the fact they when they play they made it look so easy and they are both some of the most clutch players to ever play their sport. They both play at their best in the biggest most important games. I grew up and started watching football during the Montana era, also I'm a huge Barca fan and have been watching Messi since he came up so I have a pretty good prespective.

so we got the niners and bieng cules in common. my brother! (btw i know this topic for another thread but 5 goals???the guy is the Ali of soccer).

Ive always been fascinated by Montana. ive seen the big games but from what i hear moments like the comeback against NO was a commonplace theme of his.

Mes que un club!!!

That game and Messi were insane!! 7-0 and he made it look so easy, plus Tello looked really good (2 goals) in his 1st CL game!! I was going crazy watching it!

Yeah when Montana was playing and we were down in the 4th quarter you never got nervous it was almost like a given if he had the ball last we would win. I was 4 years old during the Catch and while I don't remember the whole game I definitely remember the Catch because my whole family went crazy. I didn't really start getting into football on my own until the '84 season but before and after I always had a feeling of complete assurance that we would win whenever he had the ball last with a chance to win. I have never had that feeling for any other player, team, or sport since Joe! He just had this way of making you feel relaxed when he did it. Although I have to say Messi is starting bring back that good old feeling. Sometimes I have to remind myself he only 24 and hasn't even reached his prime yet, scary!

Also to try and bring this back to the original topic, I loved Young growing up too! It was just great watching him play because he was the opposite of Joe in their playing styles. As montana always seemed to play realxed Young played with so much emotion and fire, which was the same way i played football. So as much as I love Joe, I always identified with Young much more.

Yeh folk said Brady reminds them of Montana but that feeling you talking about i never got it from Brady. the man is clutch but the games ive seen of Montana,Elway, Marino and Joe always stood out just because he was just a magician. everyone else had those long deep throws in their repertoire but Joe would methodically rip you apart in less than a minute. Damn i really really wish i was around for those days. Although Young doesnt seem to be a bad deal to swallow. When i think about it maybe people had a hard time accepting Steve because he was more of a Brees/Manning type player while Joe was....well one of a kind.

Ala Messi haha. 24.....hes 5 short Cesar's record. will break Raul's record next year or so and then what? Hell be setting Gretzky type numbers. s**t that wont be broken ever. Its athletes like him that you can say this guy was made from God just for that reason.
You know my dream before I die is to watch a game in Nou Camp. I know folk here think soccer is terrible, slow long blah blah. I tell em just put on a Barcelona game. doesnt matter against who. The intricacy of the passing, the movement, the discipline, the incredible speed of play and above all Messi. I dare you not to fall in love with the game. Visca Barca! y Visca Niners
Someone needs to put this segment online.
- Actually started a game at RB for the Los Angeles Express of the USFL
- 2x NFL MVP
- Greatest Individual Super Bowl Performance
- Finest Left Armed QB in NFL History
- Arguably the most accurate QB ever (Peyton & Kurt Warner)

I've always been fascinated with the double standard for Steve. In a way, he was so much more physically gifted than Montana that people expected better TEAM results. For example how he is always refered to as a 1x Super Bowl Champion. But Young has 3 rings & even started atleast 3 games in each season from 1987 on. You might say, what are 3 games but we we're 10-6 in 1988 (Steve being 2-1)

I am VERY happy to see him have a successfull post nfl career with ESPN & a rather respectable position. I always felt he never got his fair share of respect. He stood behind Joe, then had to overcome Aikman's Cowboys & then boom....Brett Favre and the adorable (media) Packers came onto the scene.

Except for 1992. I don't think you can say we had the best team in the NFL & didn't win.

Fixed.

It's all about coaching with the QB, right Joe?

One of my favorite steve young moments...when they played the bears in the playoffs. Steve young ran it in, bears defender got a cheap hit after he got in. He got up fast and with fury spiked the ball in his face! Then the 49ers O-line all ran in to confront the weak little cub be fore he scattered back to his sideline.

Don't remember the score but the 9ers woopped cub @$$ that day
