I imagine this is the figure before cuts and restructuring. There's some dead weight to get rid of in terms of contracts, like Shawntae Spencer.

So you cut Moran Norris, Chilo Rachal, and Shawntae Spencer. Where does that leave the cap? Any other cuts?

Sign Mario Williams and go to the Super Bowl......

Shockingly, I agree with SanDiego on this ...

Did I say shockingly?

If we sign Mario Williams to this defense we go from one of the best current defenses to the best defense of all time. Alex don't turn it over and we don't need WR's. We win every game....

Yeah, with Mario Williams, the pressure up front on D would be unreal. Justin Smith, Mario Williams, Aldon Smith - wow - just wow.

If the other team scores 0 they can't win....

That would be rather insane... My goodness.

Front 3: McDonald, Sopoaga, Smith
Middle 4: Aldon, Bowman, Willis, Mario

On passing downs: Aldon, McDonald, Smith, Mario Williams.

imagine if we pick up dontari poe too along with all that

There would be no need to have much talent in the backfield

That would easily be the best front LB group of all time IMO, and maybe the best front 7 as a whole ever.

Oh, you are kind of misunderstanding my point. I have repeatedly said that I think Alex has earned the right to be our starting QB next year. I just dont want to overpay for him. I seriously dont think that there are other teams out there that would give Alex much of a contract. Which is why I hate the idea of giving him an eight digit salary, like a lot are suggesting.

Do I think any of those guys you listed are better options than Alex? No I dont. But if its going to take a third of our cap space to sign him, then I say let him walk and use the money to sign other key players. The idea that Alex is a 10-11 million a year player is completely insane to me.
Totally agree.

I don't really see Baalke paying him 8+ million a year, nor do I see Alex demanding 8+ million. My guess is a 3 year deal worth 20 million range, with an option for 2 additional years and the brunt of the contract loaded with incentives.

This is the reason the Alex Smith debate is important. It's not a question of whether or not to resign him; we will. It's not a question of whether or not he will start; the coaches will decide that. The only question is how much to pay him.
I can't imagine any team out there wanting to pay him 10+ million, so why should we? We need him back, but the idea that he "deserves" some "franchise" quarterback contract is absurd; he deserves what the market is willing to pay.
Can we stop with all the retarded high-end free agent speculation now? This team's going to do a few minor signings that piss people off and lead to some sarcastic remarks of "Championship" along with a lower tier free agent WR such as Meachem, people will b***h about not getting Bowe or Colston or some other high-priced free agent, in the end this team will be better off for it because as last year proved,Baalke and Harbaugh know what they're doing quite better than the people on the Webzone do.

Just saying.

I agree he deserves what the market is willing to pay. But I disagree on the amount. QB like Ryan Fitzpatrick got like 60 mill over 5 years, and Alex is a lot better than him. Sure Fitz threw for like 700 more yards and 7 more TDs in the regular season, but he tossed 18 more INTs and doesn't offer Alex's mobility or durability. Alex needs to get better at keeping eyes down field and making throws there or commiting to running the ball and scramble if nothing's there rather than worried about getting sacked and such, but he is steady and consistent and made some clutch plays. He was able to cut it loose in most games we needed it except for the last 1 unfortunately, but that giants defense when healthy is really talented. I could easily see a team like Miami saying "yeah he's not Rodgers or Brees, but we can get surround him with talent and we will win games with him" and they would think that would be worth 10-11 mill rather than 6 or 7 per year. Because if they'd had what Alex gave us this year over what Henne and the other guy gave them the last 2 or 3 years, they'd have won more games. Just look at how much better they were with Pennington, and he was the definition of game manager. But at the end of the day they could win with him.

Fitzpatrick is a perfect example. Who in their right F'ing mind other than the Bills would have been willing to pay that on the market?
Fitzpatrick signed that contract in October, when he was playing lights out.

There are so many bad contracts in this league, and Fitzpatrick highlights the list.

Yeah but you just said what the market will pay. The market makes mistakes all the time, in real life and in pro sports.

The Bills are part of the market though dude. You only need 1 team to offer you a lot of money, not every single 1 or even multiple.

Yes. "The market would not have paid Fitzpatrick that contract" is a null comment. Because he got that contract, that is what the market would pay.
im on board for signing mario

If we have 30 million to spend this offseason, investing 1/3 of that (or more) on Alex is a HUGE mistake.

Not re-signing the starting qb of a team which went 13-3 and was two bonehead plays away from the Super Bowl. That would be the HUGE mistake.

Particularly as we can afford him, it would send a disruptive message to the rest of the team.

NOT SURE IF AMIR.

If Alex wont take 3 years at 20 mil then let him walk.
Vincent Jackson has been nothing but a problem got the Chargers for years now. Why would you want to spend big money on him? I say we get Bowe.
