i do not recall that. I remember them saying that about elvis! The year of the fumble was also the year that all niner fans were moaning that the niners were winning ugly and not blowing folks out like they did the year before. Kind of reminds me of this year in a way you know. anyway it was clear that craig was at the end of the road, he had a bad year and was old and slow, kind of like how tim mcdonald and ken norton jr ended up but we never rip them do we now

they never cost us a three peat.

But Eddie D and his stupid ass riverboat gambling BS cost the 49er organization the last 10 years of purgatory. As if 5 SB trophy's weren't enough-----"Hey, I think I want to run some riverboat casinos." Say what you will, but what he did was very, very stupid and he's supposed to be smart enough to know better. What he did cost the 49er organization a lot more than Craig's fumble. 5 SB's don't give you a free pass on that BS.
Lol yes they do

5 super bowls he can do pretty much do whatever he wants.
So because of 5 SB's it's perfectly OK that he commits a felony. Yeah right. Sports are NOT more important than the law. If you think so, I suggest you reexamine your priorities. As much as I like watching the 49ers, it's still just a game. And I suppose it was OK for Mike Tyson to commit rape just because he was a heavyweight champion.
If it's "just a game" to you, why are you on a fan forum talking about the team? You stating that in this thread is in itself hypocritical.

And yes, in the world of sports, 5 Super Bowls excuses a gambling felony. I could care less about the moral fortitude of the owner of my team. Be passionate, hire a good GM and coach, and care about the players. If Mike Tyson could do all of that and win 5 Super Bowls, I'd be all for him buying the franchise from the Yorks.

Edit: And if you think I'm wrong about Eddie D, let him walk anywhere in SF and it will take 5 minutes before he's surrounded by fans offering to buy him a drink, lunch, or carry him wherever he wants to go.

Gore easily.

Craig was a great player, but I think being in a Bill Walsh offense led by Joe Montana made him look alot better than he wouldve been in any other situation.

Walsh designed the WCO to take advantage of what the NFL had no answer for at the time, and he was a big piece in that plan. He still carried it out, but he really was in the right place at the right time. Gore played on terrible Niner teams most of his career, and was always our backbone. teams stacked the box alot, and he was always a 1000+ yard, every down guy.
People fretting over the fumble

The replays of The Catch showed that MONTANA BASED GOD turned the ball over 4 times by himself, 6 times total by the offense

Craig aint no Bill Buckner

Craig scored 3 Tds in SB XIX (AGAINST MARINO). Without those 3 TDs, we don't win.

"On January 20, 1985, in Super Bowl XIX, Craig rushed for 58 yards, caught seven passes for 77 yards, and became the first player ever to score three touchdowns in a Super Bowl during the 49ers' 38–16 victory over the Miami Dolphins."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roger_Craig_%28American_football%29

Without Craig, we don't win SB XXIII (1988 -- Craig was OPOY) - That was the First 1000 / 1000 season. Anyone remembering that season knows that Craig dominated the league THAT YEAR that few others have approached. HIGH KNEES -- just ask Gary Jeter.

In the 1989 season, the 49ers advanced to the Super Bowl for the second year in a row, aided by Craig's 1,527 combined rushing/receiving yards and seven touchdowns in the season, along with his 240 combined rushing/receiving yards and two touchdowns in their two playoff games. In San Francisco's 55-10 win over the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XXIV, Craig rushed for 69 yards, caught five passes for 34 yards, and scored a touchdown.

So, Craig is MONUMENTAL to 3 SB wins. Dare I say, without him we don't win those games.

Yet, he is remembered for 1 fumble.

No it's not hypocritical. You think this forum is just for over zealous fans that think the 49ers are the most important thing in the world? And, yes it is just a game to me. I'm not some "geeked out" fan boy that idolizes athletes or sports. Nobody's going to war or curing cancer on a football field. I do hope the 49ers win on Saturday and I will be enjoying the game. But if they lose, I'm not going to get depressed and call for heads to be rolled. To me, investing that amount of emotion on something you have absolutely no control over, i.e., a sports team, is a complete waste of time. It's like falling in love with some gorgeous super model or movie star that doesn't even know you're alive. I have enough things in my life that interest me and that I enjoy doing. Whether the 49ers win or lose does NOT effect the quality of my life.

Guys, let's keep the temperature at moderate, shall we. I can't deal with two Alex Smith-type threads!

Not to take anything away from Craig, he was good.

Are you crazy! You must be young and not watched the games in the 80s! Craig was a stud back in the day...the one thing i noticed about Gore and Craig is that Craig "BROKE" a lot of tackls (The Rams game) It took 3-4 guys to bring him down with his high knee style of running and it only takes 1-2 guys to bring Frank down. Frank might break 1 tackle here and there but he's nothing like Craig! Plus Craig is a MUCH better receiver than Gore will ever be!
A few non-homer comments:

1) The fumble sucked to all hell, but we cannot entirely blame him for losing the game. What about that fake punt that got them the FG?

2) I agree....us winning the SB was not guaranteed. The character make up of our team was to play a similar game to Buffalo....not sure what we can do that with a young Steve. The ball control time of possession offense wasn't our style, nor did we have the personnel to do it. Giants might have done us a favor, although certainly didn't appreciate the hit on Joe.

3) You are treating a fumble like a dropped TD pass - Jackie Smith of the Cowboys dropping that perfectly thrown pass is the example of someone letting a team down over a single play, not Craig's fumble.
Craig, not even close. I have watched both of them. Fumble or no fumble Craig was huge, was an excellent runner and receiver. I have never forgotton his fumble but I also havnt forgotton his running style and receiving ability.

Overreact much? Wow bro, take a chill pill. No one is saying anything that you just stated.
As much as I love and respect Gore, I would go with Roger Craig.

Far better receiver and can slice through lanes quicker. Craig is just more of the receiving threat/slasher that I prefer.
i vote for Riger Craig
cant vote love gore buy he cant catch for s**t

Gore has more power but in all other areas, Craig was superior.

Lot of young posters on here who did not see Craig in his prime.

I wouldn't cry if I had to settle for Gore but given a choice...
