I always thought franchise tag was something you used as a last resort if contract negotiations don't work out, not as a first step approach in keeping key players.

I think we should keep him. He's the best safety at that position in the league IMO. He's young and only gonna get better. We HAVE to keep the defense intact, they are the reason we were playiong on sunday in the first place!
Best FS in the league? Wow. I want him back, but I don't share your extremely high opinion.
Ed Reed and Troy Polomalu have something to say about this......
Id take Earl Thomas over him too.

I think his angles are relatively poor and his tackling could use a lot of work. Many times he goes for a big hit instead of a smart play.
Yeah, he hits like a truck and gets those tipped passes. I want him back - but not overpriced. He will be an asset to this team moving forward, and I think he is a hard player to replace.. however, I wouldn't want him at 7 mil/yr. He is going to ask for a lot - he did last year and he wasn't in the Pro Bowl.

It is. I think SD was implying that Dashon would be the hardest player to resign from our squad. So the f.tag would be the best option if the front office can't hammer out a contract for him.

I don't know if the guy is a franchise type player or not, but do agree in general with those here that don't want to see this defense broken up to free agency. So I wouldn't complain if they ended up using that on him.

Not sure his freedom was the problem. LeBeau stacked the box with 8-9 guys and just dared Tebow to beat them with his arm, which he did.

I've said it multiple times that our corner play was completely boosted by our scheme. The 2 safety help and especially in our nickel package allowed the cbs to play under the receiver more often and jump routes for INTs. QBs that knew this would try and throw high and when they over threw the receiver our safeties were able to get their INTS.
Rogers will receive modest interest in FA but I stand by my opinion that scouts will recognize his success came from the system more so then his individual skill and unless they play similar scheme he will eventually become a liability.
That reason alone makes it more likely that we franchise Goldson then Rogers.
And this right here is why i'm not wanting to tag either one. Rogers never played this well before and neither did Goldson. In fact just a couple years ago he was dead last amongst DB's in coverage. Just last year NO ONE wanted him and he came back to us for cheap. AFTER we sign someone to replace him.
Now yeah, we know they fit in our system. But I don't want to break the bank for either of them. If I had to choose between the 2 it would be Rogers due to the position.

Goldson earned his paycheck this season. I just wish he'd stop missing tackles.

Outside of a couple guys, including Dashon Goldson, the free agency class at free safety is weak. In addition, outside of one prospect in the draft, there are no sure fire first round draft picks in 2012.
As you take a look in 2013, the draft class is much deeper. The 49ers could replace Goldson with a first round pick of legitimate talent.
My point is...replace the player once you have an action play to obtain his replacement. If you can't come to a deal with Goldson, franchise him, see how he plays, and make plans accordingly in 2013.

I would hate to see this guy go, hes in his prime and to see another team prosper after the steep learning curve hes gone through with the 9ers would suck big time.
