That seems reasonable to me. I'm not interested in screwing around with his agent, and he's close enough to the point where his speed is liable to drop off the deep end that I don't mind hanging the franchise tag on him.

Ideally, I'd prefer to have him come back on terms favorable to the team based upon his ability to earn a ring. But given his age, I don't mind burning a bridge by franchising him.

Edit: And if forced to choose between Rogers and Goldson, I'd take Rogers. I remember the Daryl Pollard train wreck and will take a good corner over a good safety any day of the week.

I wouldn't see it as burning a bridge. It would be like, look we have a lot of free agents this year, so we're gonna have to put the franchise tag on you. Next year or maybe by week 14 we should have your contract done....(of course we wouldn't tell him, pending on what type of year he has).

He is only 26. In his prime!

man...Goldson was in position to get 2-3 ints in a NFC Championship game....it just so happens our other dbs were playing great in those situations themselves.

its like the 9ers picked the same play as the Giants in Tecmo Bowl or something.

Goldson is a baller. I'd love to have him back, but I get the feeling we will have a much easier time re-signing Carlos Rogers. Rogers really wants to be back here badly, and I don't get the same vibe from Goldson. We may not be able to afford both. I hope both are back in Red & Gold next year.

Corners also last into their mid-thirties... where as few safeties do, and with DG's style of play he wont last much past 30. IMO they both have 3-4 years left before they are knocked down a tier in ability.

I'd rather lose DG, his physicality is nice but jesus... has he ever heard of head on a swivle or peripheral vision? He takes out nearly as many niners as he does rb's.

Goldson, coming from behind the play, should have the awareness to see the CB making a play and not knock out the CB.
Other than that, I want Goldson back. I fear we won't be able to afford him.

yup. if williams doesn't make those mistakes, today we'd be talking about how we escaped with a Super Bowl berth because of our heroic defense, and we'd be arguing about how we can play better on offense against the Pats. but what if Brown and Rogers get interceptions? What if Brown doesn't get replaced by Brock? or what if Goldson, instead of just breaking up the plays, actually made his dangerous selfish gambles worthwhile and came up with the ball? then maybe we'd still be saying how we escaped with a Super Bowl berth because of our heroic defense and arguing about the s**tty offense, no matter what Williams did.

You can't expect to turn the ball over like Williams did and expect to win.

Offense: put up a 14-10 lead
Defense: only allowed 10 points and was holding the lead in the 4th hence the Giants punting again
Williams/ ST: 2 turnovers by Williams with one out of sheer stupidity

certainly looked that way.

I think we should keep him. He's the best safety at that position in the league IMO. He's young and only gonna get better. We HAVE to keep the defense intact, they are the reason we were playiong on sunday in the first place!

Didn't Rogers get absolutely roasted the first 2 weeks with out Goldson?

I've said it multiple times that our corner play was completely boosted by our scheme. The 2 safety help and especially in our nickel package allowed the cbs to play under the receiver more often and jump routes for INTs. QBs that knew this would try and throw high and when they over threw the receiver our safeties were able to get their INTS.

Rogers will receive modest interest in FA but I stand by my opinion that scouts will recognize his success came from the system more so then his individual skill and unless they play similar scheme he will eventually become a liability.

That reason alone makes it more likely that we franchise Goldson then Rogers.

Goldson has elite level speed. He's always on the sideline deep routes and he covers as much ground as quickly as Reed and Troy. He just isn't allowed as much freedom as those...but we all saw how Troy's freedom got him in BIG trouble vs Tebow.
