I can name at least 15 players who are better...or as good as Goldson is:

In no specific order:
Ed Reed
Nick Collins
Eric Berry
Michael Griffin
Antrel Rolle
Antoine Bethea
Ryan Clark
Atogwe
Weddle
Earl Thomas
Malcolm Jenkins
Delmas
DeCoud (very under-rated safety)
Tyvon Branch
George Wilson
The question is not whether Goldson is "Top 5" safety in the NFL in terms of talent/play. He probably isn't (but isn't too far back either). The question the OP asked very correctly is:

Do we want to risk losing half of our secondary to FA in the off-season? Can we replace it with equivalent or better since, let's face it, our secondary is the weakest part of our awesome D this year?

Tagging Goldson and paying him the average of the top 5 safety salaries is a good way to avoid this risk, while keeping our FA powder dry enough to get/retain a top corner (Rogers would be nice if he stays) AND get a top WR/PR since Ginn is also a goner. The obvious route for me remains:

Tag Goldson
Spend to re-sign Rogers or get another quality corner (but are there any this year?) if he bolts.
Get a top WR/PR. Jackson is the obvious one, for the reasons I have outlined in the FA thread.

BTW, do worry about the coaching staff as well. There are going to be lots and lots of HC and coordinator openings in the off-season. Fangio is an obvious worry, and several assistants could be tempted with coordinator offers.

Our problem now that we are actually good again is different from previous seasons. "FAs wanting to come to a winner" holds only for people like Sanders in 94 who go to the championship favourites (and we're not that yet) or for Spikes who want playoffs just once before they retire (and look how THAT worked out, poor fellow). For the 99% of the rest it's all about cash, and franchising Goldson is a way to get value for money while at worst only losing one-quarter of the secondary (if Rogers goes).

Im telling you right now if he played on the cowboys giants etc( teams that are on tv every week) he would be a superstar. Ok every 4th game he might give up a TD and people act like hes not good enough to play on thier team. Give me a break... Have you guys watched Reggie Smith at all that guy couldnt take the right angle if he had a super sized protractor on the field. I WOULD PAY DASHON BEFORE ROGERS DASHON IS HOME GROWN PAY THE MAN!!! He was a 4th round pick and paid his dues I dont know what more you want.

LOL it's not hate. No one said he isn't good enough to play on this team. This thread talks about franchising him. Kind of a different topic than what you're talking about. He is an average safety, who is having a good season in terms of turnovers because he is playing on a defense that forces opposing offense to pass, and then can get after a QB on a consistent basis. Goldson has taken advantage of that, and full credit to him for that. Doesn't mean, we go out and overpay the dude. We didn't do so last season, and I doubt we'll this season.

Reed and Berry are the only 2. The others no. And Reed is old with major injury concerns. So if you are talking long term you are not even talking him.

Yeah I'm not sure about franchising him.

Only two? lol ok. That's why he had so many offers this past off-season. Get a Sunday ticket and watch other teams. Goldson is an average safety having a good year. He isn't a top 5 safety by any means.

Anyone who wouldn't take Weddle over Goldson is kidding themselves.
The Niners are now winners with a good to great HC. Players unlike years past are going to want to come to the Niners. Wont have to pay exhorbant salaries anymore to attract FAs. We have lots of FAs ourselfs like Rogers who have never won anything. Speaking on the premise that the reason players want to play is for the Super Bowl the Niners are now an attractive team with a new stadium on the horizon. Only drawback for attraction to the Niners is the state of Calif and its economy and politics which really shouldnt be that much of a factor. With all that being said I wouldnt franchise Goldson.
Goldson is not worthy of a franchise tag, but for anyone knocking him too much we lost the Dallas game because he wasn't playing yet.

This part I agree with.

Uh, no. The only players on that list better then him are Reed, Thomas, and Berry and Berry's out for the season Im only saying that cause I see his potential. Your hatin' thinking all these joke players are better then him, Jenkins his secondary is horrible Delmas same goes with detroits, Atogwa was released last offseason (winner) . Nice try but your way off base.

Agree with you there. Way off base. And "hatin." Even Reed is old and has an injured neck. Nobody would take a 33 year old with a bad neck over a 27 year old Goldson. BTW Reed has 3 int's. And Goldson has 6. This year and long term Goldson is better. Not talking about historical or past. Not sure what you get for having a guy who was good in the "past." Maybe a bag of skittles or something...
Another way of looking at it. 2011 season #'s.

Dashon Goldson: 27 years old. 64 tackles, 1 forced fumble, 6 interceptions.

Ed Reed: 33 years old. 48 tackles, 1 forced fumble, 3 interceptions.

Plus a very bad neck for Reed. Age and injuries catching up.

No person in their right mind would take Reed now or long term over Goldson. These guys are going off of "past reputation." What do you get for past great play? Mabye a bag of skittles or something...
skittles.:) We got two big signings on defense, Carlos and Dashon, we gotta keep them both cheaper to sign Carlos long term and franchise tag Dashon. Its not gonna break the bank its a one year deal to make sure its not a fluke season also. Win, win situation for us.
