Maybe the real question we should be asking: Can any other QB perform better in Harbaugh's system? If yes, go get em. If no, sign Alex.

I think your "real question" needs to be modified: "Can any other QB who the 9ers could get perform better in Harbaugh's system?"
Under your question I would say Tom Brady, etc. BUT out of the QBs we could get I think none of the potential FAs would be better than Alex Smith. That might change. We got 10 games left. Still I am doubting that we replace Smith with anyone else next year.

None of who we can get will be better than Alex. He's playing top 8 right now according to the rankings. Anybody above that will be kept on their team.

well they're not going to franchise him, so if he keeps improving over the course of the season then long term deal it is.

That's my take right now a well. I just don't see Smith playing into the bottom part of the QBs in this league. Plus we are already out of the Luck draft (heck, he might stay for his senior year) and I cann't see us drafting a QB next year.

This.
The kid (yes, he's still a kid and only 3 years older than Kaep) has played well since week 9 or so of last year. People who say he hasn't played well enough aren't giving him any credit or are blindly turning their eyes to good play.
I've noticed that some are resorting to guerilla warfare. Instead of battling head-on like the good old days they seem to lie in wait for opportunities to snipe. The days of Alex "Leaf" and "Alice" seem to be thankfully behind us. I've noticed that some of the people who have been hardest on Alex over the years now seem really happy with his and the team's success. Others, not so much.
Yeah I've notice this also. The ones who are still around takes shots at smith every chance they get. Ignoring or making excuses for his good plays and focusing on the bad. The rest are waiting and probably hoping that smith's play implodes so they can come back in full force.

At this point the question should be what is going to take to turn Alex into the long term solution.
That's not me insulting him, it's me saying how are we going to upgrade the offense to make Alex into a better quarterback. New England had a good game manager in Brady added Moss and Welker and he took that next step.

Braylon Edwards is coming back from injury. And we will quit using VD to block and start using where he is really valuable. Out in the patterns...

I don't think we need to upgrade the offense (well perhaps our WRs but with Braylon coming back etc. that not a huge issue). The way for Alex to be a better QB (and he's in the top 10 right now) is to let him continue to play and improve in Harbaugh's system.
People need to remember that Smith hasn't played in the WCO since his rookie year and this last game was his SIXTH in a new offensive system. What Alex Smith has done (TOP 10 QB Play) and the rest of the offense this year is frankly amazing.

I'm talking long term. Fixing the line, adding missing pieces in the passing offense.
Right now I see us as a Baltimore type team. Not the 2000 Baltimore team that had the best defense of all time. More in the range of the John Harbaugh and Joe Flacco led Baltimore teams. The question becomes how do you get ahead of a great team like Green Bay that has the defense and the quarterback to win it all?

Its impossible to get away with saying this, because of the current situation with Alex playing pretty well, but Colin Kaepernick will be the starting quarterback next year. He can do everything Alex Smith can do, but with a better arm, better accuracy, no high throws, and elite scrambling ability.
This kid is ultra-talented, and just like with Aldon Smith, Ray McDonald, NaVorro Bowman, the haters will be proven wrong on him.

There are way too many what-ifs and specultive points in your post to know. Is Kaep talented? Sure. Was Nate Davis? Yes.
You might be right. Perhaps Kaep turns into the next Montana or Young. Still there are way too many assumptions to believe or even think that the 9ers will let Alex Smith walk and just start Kaep because they have a feeling the kid will be good. Quality NFL QBs don't grow on trees. Heck, even bad QBs whose best days have pasted get starting jobs (just look at McNabb).
People on this board have such a blind hate for Smith that they forget the kid is and has played really good QB that most teams in the NFL would die for.

QB rating is not the only way to judge a quarterback. Matt Cassel had a similiar rating last year but no one was confusing him for one of the best quarterbacks in the league.
I'm not trying to hate on Alex here. Right now it looks like we got a superior defense, a very good run game and great special teams. The goal should be to build a passing attack that rivals the rest of our team. We're going to face very good football teams with elite quarterback play come playoff time. Matt Cassel and David Garrard is not going to get it done.
I'm not saying Alex can't take that next step, but if he's going to be our long term solution then he better be able to do it. The question is what do we have to do to get him there?
