What is Alex Smith for the 49ers?

His IQ is higher than most of this forum, seriously.

Dude just needed a coach and an Oline.

He's playing better than Joe Namath in his superbowl year.

Please. STFU.

But Sus and Shaj say no.....

Still here

In honesty we won the last game in spite of Alex. I know he made the pass to win the game, but if we had a better QB we would have killed the Lions.

No. We won it BECAUSE of Alex. We were down and he led us back to victory on 4th and goal no less against a 5 - 0 Lions team on their home field...

f**k it sign him for another 2 years. I think picking up another QB in the offseason or starting Kaepernick (who is in no way, shape, or form ready to start for us) would set us back. Always felt as long as he had continuity he would be successful.

Let Kaepernick develop and start 2 or 3 years down the road.

Go niners!
I am happy that Alex is having some success, but let's be honest. Alex is a product of Harbaugh and his system. I think another QB with more ability would do much better in this situation and I would honestly like to see what another QB could do under Harbaugh's tutelage. Having said that, I am on board with whatever Harbaugh decides to do; Bring Alex back, make Kaepernick our QB, or get another long-term guy.

IN HARBAUGH WE TRUST!
He is the short term answer. He will be here until he loses us a few games or something like that happens. There are better Qb's out there and Harbaugh knows it. I don't think he would turn down a chance to upgrade and become a better team. However, Alex has impressed me and I would love to be proven wrong again by him playing even better. I hope it happens

Alex has been able to re-write his own legacy as these games played out during the season. But he's not done getting better & he KNOWS it.

This.

The kid (yes, he's still a kid and only 3 years older than Kaep) has played well since week 9 or so of last year. People who say he hasn't played well enough aren't giving him any credit or are blindly turning their eyes to good play.

I've noticed that some are resorting to guerilla warfare. Instead of battling head-on like the good old days they seem to lie in wait for opportunities to snipe. The days of Alex "Leaf" and "Alice" seem to be thankfully behind us. I've noticed that some of the people who have been hardest on Alex over the years now seem really happy with his and the team's success. Others, not so much.
I'll let the season play out before I answer seriously, but right now I'm leaning toward short term.

I don't agree with this at all.

I agree. He will continue to get better.
