What can we do about the O-line?

Why is the line not getting any push? It seems like they are playing on their side most of the time when run blocking. Why? Coaching, Scheme, players?

Why is this thread not the top of the first page from now until next week. The OL is a total train wreck. Until that changes, this offense CANNOT work.
My first thought is to put a four point suspension seat belt on the end of the bench for Chilo Rachal. Buckle him into it, put a pad lock on the thing and flush the key into the Bay.
Put Kilgore into the RG spot. He looked promising in PS. Better footwork and quicker overall than either Rachal or Snyder. The OL needs more quickness. These bulldozers are stuck in wet concrete. Kilgore can't do any worse and he could be a big improvement
Move Snyder to center and bench Goodwin. I don't see Goodwin as being noticeably better than Snyder but the communication seems to be better with Snyder at center.
I don't know what to do about Staley. He just has not played at all well since his injuries. I don't normally like switching players around during the season but with as much of the season remaining as there is, I would try switching Staley and Davis back to their college positions. It couldn't get any worse. As we learned with Barry Sims, sometimes a guy that struggles on one side does well on the other.
For now, the center and RG spots MUST be MUCH better next week or Colin Kaepernick will be taking over at QB for a broken Alex Smith but he better have his track shoes on because he will be running for his life.

Offensive line: F+. They get the plus because they gave Alex Smith, Kendall Hunter, and Greg Roman enough time to pull off their fourth quarter comeback drive. Besides that, this game was an embarrassment for Mike Solari and Tim Drevno's group. They allowed five sacks, and assisted Gore and Hunter to a measly 70 yards rushing on 27 attempts. Joe Staley gave up two sacks and played a terrible game. Anthony Davis gave up one sack but got beaten many more times. Chilo Rachal had two holding penalties, two false starts, he gave up a sack and got benched. He should remain on the bench. Jonathan Goodwin got pushed back into the pocket all day long. Trent Baalke should have made it a higher priority to resign center David Baas, because Goodwin is playing very poorly for the Niners. The only member of this line who's holding his own right now is Mike Iupati, and he gave up a sack today, too. Both guards are too slow to pull. The unit cannot pick up a blitz. They can't even set up a screen pass. The Niners would be a much better team if they had drafted offensive lineman more wisely. It's tough to figure how any NFL team can win games consistently with this offensive line.

I can't remember the o-line being this awful before. Alex has done well considering the tools he's been given (leaky o-line, top two wr's haven't been healthy and on the field together at once yet). I hope Chilo is finally done and we can start undoing more of the Singletary/Nolan era.

Even Smith's pick didn't put them ahead. Now I have never been a believer in Smith's ability , but I like his work ethic , his toughness , and his loyalty to the team. And I will continue to try and be fair in evaluating what he has to work with , including the play calling and so far he has executed those well enough to give us the lead. The team as a whole has played poorly in the second halves of both games and I would include our coaching in the second half as well. JMHO
Hard to Run when you can't pass
How did the Chiefs do it last season? Ravens on the way to a SB? Its possible if your Oline can get a push but you'll probably blame Alex for not picking the right Olineman in the draft.

Something has to be done ASAP. I think the 9ers should fire Solari to light a fire! The entire O-Line looks out of position. This guy looks better here, this guy should be benched etc. Why is Harbaugh so scared to bench Chilo? Is Chilo banging Yorks daughter? Well probably not because he is a girl himself. Goodwin cant make a freakin call so bench him also. He was an all-pro because he played in a weak division. I just hope he does something before its too late. I have a feeling he will sit on this 2-1 record as a reason not to change anything.

Seriously, it's time. -I still call Kilgore taking the starting job at RG around week 8.

I think it comes sooner....1 more serious disaster from Chilo and things will have to change.

Can someone make a clip of the ref saying, "False start. Entire offensive line."

If they are going to make the change, they need to do it sooner than that. Give the kid the time to settle in. He dominated 2nd and 3rd stringers in pre-season. Time to see if he can step it up one more level.
What I especially liked about him was how he consistently kept low leverage and kept his feet moving. I don't recall him ever getting bull rushed and pushed back. He also was quick and smooth pulling, something none of the other guards have executed well this season.

Dj, putting a chain and buckle on Rachal sounds really good. But maybe during pregame someone could also put his feet in fast drying buckets of cement. Just so he doesn't get on the field. He was "turrible". I agree with every single comment you made. I also agree with the post for F+ grade. DJ, if we are going to make moves, I agree, do 'em now. As for comments on OL coaches, guys, there is one guy responsible for OL badness and his title is HC. That is his OL . He needs to fix it, which requires changing players, moving tackles, and sitting Rachal and goodwin. Good grief coach, you are only as good as your weakest link and that be your OL. Wanna quick fix?
Ok, try snapping it and slinging it , 1 steppers, 3 yds, maybe 4, with WRs and TEs looking for ball immediately after leaving the LOS. THAT will make up for a lot of bad in the OL, will require holding a block for 1 sec, and I think our OL might be able to succeed with that. What exactly Coach Harbaugh , do you have against 1 step passes when your entire OL CANNOT block? Those dinks and dunks make up for an awful lot of an AWFUL OL. No kidding , coach, you ought to try it. Actually you did on first play of game for 6 yds and then? we never saw it again. Probably keeping it a secret, I guess. You're better than that Jim. We have seen you before, and you are better than that. Jeez, man , just look at those tapes. Throw short , quick hitters til they move off the dam OL. And it will cover up some really, awful, stinky OL play.
