Rookie head coach ... pedestrian QB..... offensive line and defensive backfield inconsistency. This is a learning year for Harbaugh IMO. I'd rather get blown out than lose like this, but thus far the season is playing out to my expectations. At the end of the day we still hold a share of the NFC West lead.

Agreed! And I'll add no pass rush what so ever, as well. It looks like the same team as last year, but we still can't blame the coaching staff too early for that. I will say that the penalty Harbaugh didn't take bit him in the ass bad. If taken, It would have taken time off the clock and you never know maybe Gore could have broken one.

Hard to say what happens if you take the points off the board, i don't fault him for it the way the offense was playing...... fumbled snap, gore fumble, missed FG on a 4th down with less time on the clock. Any of those scenarios could have had the Cowboys kicking for the win in regulation. Bottom line is he put it on his best unit(defense) and they didn't come though.

I understand all the variables, but not taking the penalty is basically telling your offense you don't trust them at all. As I said last week after the Seahawk game, it looks like Harbaugh has absolutely no trust in Alex and I don't blame him one bit, not taking the penalty clearly proved that.
Very good observation. I think a reality check is also in order, JH is a first year HC. He is going to make quite a few mistakes during this season and some will be baffeling. Still I feel he'll grow and improve. Our weakest link right now is the Oline.

Be honest. Who here would have been upset if they had been told last Friday that the 49er offense would put up 24 points against Rob Ryan's defense but lose in overtime?

It is still a lose and it hurts to see the OL and secondary play so poorly but Dallas is a much more talented club.

I think it has more to do with not trusting the o line. They played much worse than Smith, some folks are still living by the Shaj mantra that players never improve. Smith has been the offense this year with no help from the running game at all. Our line is turrable, just turrable.

Bill Walsh's first season : 2-14

Now i wasn't alive then, but i'm curious as to how many "fans" were calling for Walsh's head. Calm down with the "Harbaugh is overmatched in the NFL" bullcrap. He is going to take his lumps, but in the end he is smart, dedicated coach who will succeed with the 9ers. C'mon people, we are 1-1. Last time i check there are 16 games in a season.

Nobody was because the Zone, the internet and major sports talk radio didn't exist. Well, at least as they are known today.

Much like years past, the Niners are getting out coached coming out of the half. In both games this season, the Cowboys and Seahawks made adjustments that the Niners couldn't keep up with

the thing that i am most concerned about it's the fact we looked like a true Nolan or singletary team : no clue how to win a close game against a quality opponent.
Unfortunately, things haven't change ...

Very true. This team falls apart in the second half, nothing has changed. I was excited about Harbaugh but he is starting to scare me, he might be more or as conservative as Singlecell. Also, I realize that the catch was overruled but he was ready to punt on 4 and 1 in OT when it was crystal clear that our D couldn't stop Dallas.

Im still willing to give JH some time before I compare him to Sing.

our offense is very limited right now. So I cant completely rip him for his play-calling. We only had 3 healthy WR's after Edwards went down.
Can't throw to Davis if he's held back pass blocking.

If this was a Sing coached team the play calling would have been just like last week.

What were my expectations and why I'm not too disappointed:

QB: Played a tough and altogether good game. Interception seemed to be a bad decision but that was it for the negative. The many positives are self explanatory.

RB: Don't know if it's all the line or if Gore is not back to 100%. My money is on the line not doing well for the second week.

WR: Not bad for back ups. Not enough talent on this team to absorb injuries to key players and bounce back strong.

OL: Young and not ready for prime time. Harbaugh is trying his best to neutralize the negative--playing with extra blockers, moving Smith around, running at Ware. But this line is not showing much yet. I hope they get it together by mid year, which was my projection before the season.

DL: Not bad considering there were so few blitzes and even I could see J Smith making calls for straight lanes. Some pressure but not enough.

LB: No blitzing? Why? Saw Willis make some very good plays but would have liked some more pressure. Perhaps they had to help the DBs too much?

DB: Bad, very bad, terribly bad! Looked lost and slow, a bad combination! Did I mention bad?

ST: Good job, with no major errors.

Coaching: Not sure what happens in the second half, especially on D but they have to come up with an answer. It could simply be that the 9ers are good enough to surprise people but not good enough to keep it up. Did not think it a mistake to keep the points. It was written today that it was conventional wisdom and there is usually a reason for this. Stats specialist said the decision is about the same as a two yard run on first down versus a four yard run. Not very significant statistically.

All in all, while I'm disappointed there is progress evident from week one so by mid year we should see a big change. Hope so!
