“In the past game we were only throwing for 124 yards,” quarterbackAlex Smith said. “Obviously, I’d like to build upon that. So we were efficient as far as completion percentage, but I’d really like to get a little more production.”

"I’m sure it won’t be too many hours until I really start thinking about this (upcoming) week,” Harbaugh said after a 33-17 win over Seattle. “I always feel that a football team has a chance to gain its biggest improvement from Week 1 to Week 2.
It's starting to make a little sense to me now. This is actually a good read, but I think I am starting to see Harbaugh's approach. Come out and play efficient football and get a clue of where we are exactly. I expect us to build upon this next week. Coming in throwing variations more of the offense, but remain efficient and not overwhelm ourselves. I think that right there is key. Don't force things that aren't there, and build upon what we already have in place. Little bits at a time, and how the team responds will tell how fast we progress.

I dunno to me it makes sense.

2) Speaking of Earl Thomas, that guy is going to be a thorn in the 49ers side for a LONG time. It seems like everytime it was third down that guy was making the play preventing us from getting it. He's a good one and needs to be accounted for.

3) On second viewing, Alex played better than I thought. I was a bit frustrated with the playcalling, but he did what he was asked and made some really good throws. Three of them were to VD, but the last one should have been a penalty. VD did hold up as not to get hit, but he was also held. I dunno if he figured there would be a flag so why get blasted, but to be honest I'd rather he NOT catch that because he's been hurt on those kinds of plays before.

4) I'm not saying that Frank has lost it, but his play concerned me. Seattle stacked the run alot and it's not like he had clean lanes to run through, but it just seemed he didn't have that little extra he usually has to get the extra yard that results in a first down or TD. It could have just been a bad game, he may not have his legs yet, or it could have been great play by Seattle....but it was enough to be concerned about.

5) Aldon Smith is a freak of nature. He didn't have a great game and wasn't dominant, but he made a few plays that no other human being could. First, on a play where the Tackle was trying to cut him...he put BOTH hands on the ground and sprung righ back to his feat. It was almost like he was a four legged animal and his arms and legs were the same length. He didn't make the play, but I had to watch it 2 or 3 times to see if I was actually seeing what I was seeing. In the second half he was cut again, easily avoided it and got the longest arms I've ever seen up in the air and on the ball. This guy is young and raw and has a long of ways to go....but he needs to join the X-Men because the guy is a freakin' mutant.

6) Scheme: When I watched the game the first time, I suspected that the Adam Snyder shift penalty was intentional. Now I'm sure of it. It was 4th and one and that shift gave the 49ers a first down. The gameplan was kinda vanilla, but there were little moments here and there where we got a glimpse of what we have to look forward to. The fake one way and then run behind Alex play. Nice. I honestly think that Harbaugh and Roman didn't feel the need to open the bag for this game and only used what they had to to get the W. When Seattle got within 2, I think they would have opened it a bit....but Teddy Ginn sealed the game for them.

7) Ted Ginn: Wow. He took 2 back, but he almost broke 2 more. I dubnno if there is something different about him this year, if Seely is just a better coach, or if the game was just a fluke....but he was ON on Sunday. He took some chances and lost some yards a few times (all really good returners do), but that guy was better than I've ever seen him.

8) Edwards is gonna be huge this year. He was held. Alot. We are gonna see many jump balls for him and he's gonna move the sticks.

9) Ray McDonald. Wow. Dominant. Only 1 sack on the sheet but disruptive the entire day

Good analysis. I saw it the same way. Alex was actually pretty good, McDonald was dominant, Gore worries me a little, Aldon Smith will be awesome, etc. The only thing I disagree on is the Snyder shifting penelty. Still think it was accidental.

I have NEVER seen an eligable tackle shift. NEVER. There was also no reason for him to shift. When he moved, he motioned to Vernon to shift up....and he never did.

There is really no way to prove it one way or the other, but I think it was intentional.
I thought that at first also but look at how confused Alex is. Doesn't look like he was faking it either. Guess we'll never really know.
marvin49 thanks for the thoughts i always enjoy other peoples thought of the games days after the games... it always makes for sense when u watch the game the second time. good job.

It didn't look like he was confused to me. It looks like he is running over to explain it to the ref.

Aldon Smith is unique, he's going to bust loose in the next few weeks. I disagree with the Gore analysis, there were no lanes to run and he didn't get a chance to build up any steam once he got the hand off. Ginn will make up that money he lost, maybe this season. He adds a dimension that teams dream of. Offense and defense have to work hard whereas in seconds Ginn puts points on the board. When teams stop kicking to him it will translate into better field position for the offense.

4 notes too add

Jmorgan knee too chest catch had my rewind button in full use, that was awesome and had not expected it
Jsmith was a monster and I love his energy he brings to the Dline, never quits on a play and he is rewarded for his effort
Never saw Ginn go up the middle before on a punt return, always going to sideline then jumping out before contact, hope this is a permenant change
lord fangio please keep it up, First game in awhile where second half adjustments didn't give up huge passing yards

I rewatched it also on NFL Rewind. I tend to agree with a lot of your points. This is what I take away from it.

1) Alex played really well. The play calls were what they were. But when he was asked to make a play he threw the ball well. He was very accurate, did not turn the ball over, looked confident and ran one in and won the game. These guys are massively overreacting. It was a good game by Alex.

2) Frank Gore looks SLOW! I mean SLOW! On most plays the 1st guy tackles him and he can't get to the corner. He has no speed or explosiveness left after the shattered hip. I'm really concerned about him. Not just one or 2 plays. The whole game.

3) Ray Mac was a complete beast. Completely unblockable all game.

4) Justin Smith was almost as good.

5) The play where people complain VD alligator armed he was mugged. He was held and grabbed. Should have been interference but the officials missed it.

6) Braylon was also interfered with a lot.

7) Could have been substantially more passing yards if not for 5 and 6.

8) Ginn was awesome obviously. He was close to breaking a few more if you rewatch it.

9) Bowman and Willis were good.

10) We had a conservative gameplan because we were well in control most of the game. And it worked. People are way overreacting to that also.

11) Our secondary is still a huge concern. They are big time toast on huge plays.

12) Our offense wasn't that bad. Just not super aggressive. But they had the lead. They played mostly mistake free and made enough plays when called upon.
Pretty much noticed all of them except #1. Didn't see much of Crabtree at all. Thanks for the analysis though. P.S. I was one of the first on the Earl Thomas bandwagon. Wish we had him and I would take him over any body else on the Seattle team right now. He definitely plays well and gives 110%.

Also, one thing on Frank and I do agree he was off and it's not like we had open lanes all day and we weren't playing a vanilla offense but he still did seem to go down easier at times. My thought would be does anyone think the coaches told him to start taking it easy to stretch his career out longer? I know they will probably have Hunter waiting in the wings whenever they need him so it might not be the case? Still, for all we know they want to start easing up on Frank, work Kendall in some more. A 2 RB system could end up helping Frank stay healthy and play longer.

I don't see the coaches saying, hey go down on first contact don't worry about the first down marker a yard a way.
Great post as usual Marvin, I would also like to point out what a good game Haralson had with two sacks as well as two forced fumbles. We seem to have a pretty stout front seven and aside from a small part of the third quarter, our dbs looked good too. Hope we put a whooping on the Cowboys Sunday.

I read an article about how the Brad Seely was given more practice time than usual with special teams during the off-season and so far it's starting to show, 49ers might be top 10 in special teams this season, in fact I think they're already #1 in the league.

That special teams performance overall might have been the best of all time. 52+ yard net punting average. They got nothing on returns. 4/4 on FGs. Oh, and 2 kick return TDs. Ridiculous.

I don't remember who it was, but someone on this board said that rewatching that play you can see that Crabtree was Smith's second read and he had already past him at that point so, if that's true, he is going through his progression.

Still, it seems great QB's are able to sometimes go back to earlier reads if they have time. I don't remember how much time Smith had on that play. If he wasn't rushed it would have been nice for him to have worked his way back.

Davis was beaten on that play pretty badly, he was no longer in front of his man when Alex threw the ball although his mans momentum still needed to shift. Alex did the safe thing because he saw he was beaten and so he dumped it off. In reality had he dumped it sooner Gore maybe had a chance to score. A rock and a hard place. I think he went through his reads properly though. The ball was out long before Crabtree came open - now he could have thrown him open, but my guess (and I can't see w/o game filim) is that there were defenders in the area who vacated when the pass went out as well. So it wasn't quite so easy.
