That's not back peddling, that's simply turning your hips and running. He'd be inside which means Alex would have to loft it up...which gives him more time to get position..and yes, it becomes a jumping contest. Or you can take the safe 5 yard dump.

I take the dump.

the LB is 10 yards away from Crabs

which LB are you talking about? I'm talking about the one just underneath and to his right.

#31 strong safety Cam Chancellor.
yah him

agreed. Couldn't read the number.

Davis is moving in the same direction, being guarded by #21, who's also moving in the same direction. Who says #21 doesn't end up right in front of your little window and pick it off? There are so many variables that you can't just pause it where it's convenient for your argument and assume something good will happen.

This picture is perhaps the ultimate example of the futility of the A. Smith debate: NOTHING is going to make either "side" change its mind and EVERYTHING is viewed through a pre-determined filter.

I could give you that but Crabtree would be nowhere in the picture. He would still be to the far left doing his cut. Not ready to turn his head and still behind the first of 3 guys (DB, Davis, DB)
Exactly, so for this throw to happen Alex would have had to wait a little bit longer before dumping off to Gore to see what the DBs were gonna do if Alex stayed looking to the left.

Maybe Alex felt the pressure coming from Clemons and didnt want to hold on so he went to his checkdown, IF Anthony Davis would have blocked like the other guys instead of laying on his stomach I think Alex would have hit Crabs for the TD.

I wish one of the reporters would have asked Alex about this play, he usually is pretty good about telling what he was thinking on a certain play

The LB is right in the middle on the goal-line, 2-3 yards to the right of Cam Chancellor, the SS. Both look to be reading Alex's eyes AND eyeing VD on the shallower route. Crabtree gets a little jammed by a linebacker who releases him and it looks like Crabtree was screened by VD as he gets behind Chancellor to go across the back middle.
Do some of you not have enough to do? I doubt that any pass play by any QB over the last few years has been as rehashed and debated as much as this one has, particularly in view of it being a regular season game where the outcome of the game did not depend on the play.
wow you guys hella dissected that play

Exactly why something like this is impossible to use for either side of the debate.

I think there's merit to debating this play. The debate is whether Alex got the best possible result out of this play based on his decision making. Right now, it seems like any other innocuous incompletion (or completion if Frank had held on). He's got a Captain (premature) checkdown knock on him, and this may be one of those cases.

Doesn't show up on the stat sheet as bad, doesn't show up as good, but the cumulative effect is less points on the board.

Nah. It can be USED, but it just will not be effective.

It's like Dems v. Repubs, Christians v. Atheists, and the like.
The last pic shows Smith ready to throw. The first is his initial look at Davis. The second pic is just before go away from the read. Crabtree is nowhere near. Not indicated on these pictures is the rusher coming up fast towards him. Anthony Davis was already beaten in pic 3

That pic tells me that there is still a pretty wide box.
Oh the window is so there. Just throw it just to the left of the Goal Post.

Also, the blocking was excellent and Alex needed to step up before checking down.
