Report: Chargers lose two prospects
September, 4, 2011Sep 4 2:57 PM ET
By Bill Williamson

This has to sting the San Diego Chargers a bit. The San Diego Union Tribune reports that two undrafted rookies the Chargers cut were claimed. Quarterback Scott Tolzien was claimed by San Francisco and center/guard Colin Baxter was claimed by the New York Jets.
It’s not overly common for undrafted free agents to be claimed right after not making the 53-man roster. Tolzien and Baxter both had good summers.
The Chargers liked Tolzien a lot. The paper reported that the Chargers saw him as a potential future backup to Philip Rivers. Now, San Diego just has Rivers and backup Billy Volek in the program. That is all it needs, but it would have been nice for the team to develop Tolzien. Now that the gamble to try to stash Tolzien on the practice squad didn’t work, the Chargers could look to add a young quarterback to the practice squad
I would compare Tolzien and Kaerpernick like this:

Kaepernick
Chance of being an NFL caliber QB (solid back up or starter): 50%
Chance of being an NFL superstar QB: 25%

Tolzien
Chance of being an NFL caliber QB (solid back up or starter): 75%
Chance of being an NFL superstar QB: 10%

Now, those numbers are not rock solid statistics. In reality all those numbers should probably be much lower... I'm just using them to illustrate the difference between the two QBs. One is a "boom or bust" prospect and the other is a "pro ready" with "limited upside" prospect.

If I knew I'd have to start one of them this year I'd probably want it to be Tolzien. He looks way more comfortable right now. But I do think Kaepernick has more of a chance to be superstar player. And that's worth gambling on. Picking up Tolzien is just a way of hedging that bet.

So? When alex went down last year, we had to rely on s**tty david carr and mediocre troy, look at what's out there right now and tell me that the FA's would do better than a rookie..Maiocco threw down names like clemens and orlovsky(and the obvious mccown). Mccown looked ok in limited action against 3rd stringers, but didn't really pull a nate davis either.

The FA qb's that are out there are out there for a reason. I'd personally rather not WASTE a roster spot on guys who GM's in the entire league already know are busts(veteran busts though... ).We're rebuilding, might as well let harbaugh get his hands on as many rookies as he can to try to find the franchise QB we've been looking for for the past decade.

Put it this way, there are very few teams in the league that can say that if their #1 QB goes down, they'll still win games. A few powerhouses of course can still manage, like GB and pittsburgh, both who have an incredibly strong defense, run game, and decent backups.

Our stopgap is alex. Any other veterans are just bench warmers, whereas a rookie could potentially be a starter in the long run. If we have to rush one rookie in early, big deal all it is is an experience for them to learn from. Best way to learn is by dodging the real bullets.

Hall of Fame!

Yet he wont even be mentioned in any record books for it.

Just more of the same with Baalke, he was taught well by his former boss McClueless.

Good god we are screwed again.

Put a sock in it, Sus.
Colt McCoy 2.0.

And I say, "What is wrong with that!"

Seriously, the whole veteran back-up QB philosophy is for teams who have a good to great chance at getting far into the playoffs and into the Superbowl. Analysts, of all people, should know WE aren't one of those teams that MUST follow that philosophy.

No. When you claim a guy off waivers, he has to go onto the 53 man.

I am not sure about the rules, but I know he has to go on the 53-man roster.

Does this mean that he has stay on the 53-man roster?

I think that if we want to put him on the PS, we have to waive him, and he has to pass waivers before he can be put on the PS.

Is this correct?

Yeah, he has to be on the 53-man.
I like this move. A decent future QB is finally on this roster with CK, T or a really motivated Alex. If Alex does horrible this year, the 49ers can draft another QB and have CK and T battle it out to be next year's starters.

This isn't a bad situation.

Why is everyone saying Kap has a higher ceiling?

What about him says high ceiling? That he's 6'4 and more athletic? who gives a s**t! This new kid actually looks like a QUARTERBACK.

We all should know by now intangibles mean s**t.
What number is Tolzien gonna wear? -I'm betting either #6 (it's close to 16), or #18 (his high school number).
