Omon looks good against 3rd stringers in pre-season. Just maybe he's a practice squad guy. Baalke might be able to find something better during roster cutdowns if necessary.

I remember Kory Sheets and Thomas Clayton.

He was an NFL Europe star who the Niners picked up, was the king of pre season and Niner fans went nuts.....despite him never really being NFL caliber. He belongs in the CFL class for sure

Omon looks good... no need to take that away from him just because other backups have looked good in PS games. If people wish to think highly of him, what's the harm? (so long as they really aren't suggesting that he is >>> Gore)

I guess hope isn't the correct thing I should have said. The problem I have (and it hasn't started with Omon to the extent with other players) is that guys like this show up and everyone acts like they are a talent evaluator and somehow they know better than the 4 separate NFL front offices and suddenly THIS GUY is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Here is a list of guys that supposedly were going to light up the world and be the our savior just from the past few season. And the GM/coaches/fans who disputed it were dumb and have no idea what they are talking about.

Kory Sheets
Thomas Clayton
Jason Hill
Nate Davis
Bear Pascoe
Etc...

In the case of Omon, well, we should trade Frank Gore and keep him as a third down back. Or he should take Dixon's roster spot, etc...Look, he might be better than Dixon or even Hunter, but I have no idea. I've barely seen the guy play and unless someone is seriously following football that hardcore, NO ONE on this forum has seen enough of him or even has the credentials to say whether he should make the 53 man roster or not.

Hold out all the hope you want I guess and I'll root for Xavier Omon as long as he has a Niner jersey on, but I'm not counting on him to do much of anything for the Niners or any team in the NFL. If he does...more power too him. I have no position because A) I've barely seen him play and B) I'm not a scout or talent evaluator and shouldn't pretend to be one.

Yeah alright... I'm with you there. Nothing wrong with showing interest or applause for a long-shot player... as long as it doesn't get blown way out of proportion.
It's fine to get excited about a guy as long as things are kept in perspective. He is doing all he can to make the team, and looking good against 3rd stringers like he is supposed to if he wants to move up. The perspective comes in when we havent really heard too many beat writers single him out for plays in practice against our first teamers.

He's got a great running style, just needs to show more agility and quicker feet to pull off those one-cuts against the 1st teamers, which he hasn't yet. Long shot to make the team, but if he has shown great blocking ability in practice and special teams (dont know?) he may get a shot. Doubtful though, Harbs will probably go with an extra TE, and have him as a back up FB to Miller.
Guys hopping on the Omon bandwagon need to remember, this guy is running against guys who will be bagging groceries next month. Nothing wrong with rooting for a guy, but don't get carried away. I'm still LOL'ing at the Kory Sheets outrage and where he is now.
