Sure he could suddenly blow up, but why waste hope on a guy like Omon.

Don't think I'm one of those people, but I ask you... how much does a little hope cost? How devastated should one be if their hope in a #4 RB doesn't pay off?

Omon looks good... no need to take that away from him just because other backups have looked good in PS games. If people wish to think highly of him, what's the harm? (so long as they really aren't suggesting that he is >>> Gore)

Because we've been down this road before. It's a very pointless road, littered with the tarnished hopes and dreams of former practice squaders and washups.

If you look out the right side of the tram, you'll see Nate Davis playing catch with Marcus Maxwell. To the left, you'll see Taylor Jacobs and Bear Pascoe running some blocking drills.

This is Omon's last year of PS eligibility. His NFL career has gone something like this: Drafted by Buffalo in 2008->On the 53 man roster until November 2008, when they cut him to make room for their 2008 2nd round pick/ "bust" James Hardy to come off IR. He did not clear waivers at that point for Buffalo to put him on their PS, instead Seattle picked him up under head coach Jim Mora. He finished the season in Seattle, got a signed to a futures contract. Then Mora got canned and Carroll came in with his new staff and Omon got cut immediately. The Jets picked him up of the waiver wire in Sept 2010.....as one of Rex Ryan's practice squad upcoming opponent spies....wanting info on Buffalo. Not a serious pickup. The cut him as soon as the Buffalo game was over. Signed to 49ers PS under Singletary, however he got a chance to stay, due to RB's coach Rathman staying on with Harbaugh after Singletary got canned.

If he clears waivers, he would be on his last year of PS. I followed him in college (local to me), here's some highlights. He knows how to score, and even though he doesn't have the speed to take it the distance in the NFL, he's definitely got the skill set to be on an active roster as a #2 back.

And that's a point well made.

What is with people belittling a player's efforts, even if it's against second/third stringers? He can only show against whoever they put him up against. And he has done well. Alex Smith couldn't score against second stringers; is he a scrub too?

Omon hits the hole a lot quicker and with greater conviction than Dixon IMO. At this point I hope he leapfrogs Dixon on the depth chart, although I'll admit that the likihood of that is small.

I'd like to see him play against the 1s or 2s because he looks better than Dixon, IMO. I think those two will get plenty of carries to settle who stays and who goes.

We're not belittling the efforts of the player. We're belittling the annual tradition of fans falling in love with players who have little-to-no chance of making the active roster based on a few plays in preseason games.

I always bring up Bear Pascoe because people fell HEAD OVER HEELS for the guy based on Maiocco's reports that he caught a few balls in camp. People were predicting he would start over Vernon based on practice and practice games.

The only way Omon makes the roster is if Gore gets traded. And if that does happen, I wouldn't be surprised if the 49ers cut Omon and brought in someone else... maybe Ryan Grant if the Packers cut him (cause there are reports that it could happen).

Let me be clear that I'm NOT saying the 49ers should replace Gore with Grant. Just throwing out a hypothetical.
He's better than Dixon. We might be able to find better than either Dixon or Omon on waivers though (Tashard Choice perhaps?).

Unfortunately there are 31 teams ahead of us on WB's team wish list.
This is where the loss of Byham hurts, we could keep the 4 RB's and Miller, with Byham filling in at FB if needed.

Omon looks promising, and runs allot like Gore but is a little to heavy on his feet. He's got some nice cuts but they are just a bit slower than Gore, and in the NFL thats the difference of breaking a run or getting tackled.

Haven't heard much from the beat writers about him making plays against our first team D in practice, so that probably means trying to sneak him onto the practice squad.
I like Omon.

I say Cut Norris, keep Omon, with Gore, Hunter and Dixon. With Miller at FB, but start 2 TEs with Delanie as a TE/FB type.

u dont know that

Anything's possible I guess, but I can't imagine a scenario where we keep a 4th HB, let alone one who's not a ST guy.
