Smith hasn't lost anything, since no starting job was ever assigned to him.

Smith is a better FS than Dashon, because Dashon has troubles in coverage and it looks like they are using a true FS this year as opposed to the previous DC's defense which made the safeties interchangeable. If anything, I could see Dashon being a back-up by week 2.

After Tavaris jackson throws for 437 yards and 3 tds against us?

Tavaris Jackson couldn't light up an open field for 437 yards and 3 TDs...

yeah, I actually made myself laugh after I typed that up. Although, we got schooled pretty hard by the hawks last year in week 1, so who knows what surprises they have up their sleeve with a new WR and new qb.
Glad to hear Reggie's injury is not bad. We'll see him back on the field in Sept or Oct.
Yeah really happy this wasn't a serious injury, we are gonna have some great depth at the safety position this year!

Not only does it suck for us, but it sucks for him. He's a human not a player in a video game... To finally be looking good in TC and then for a freak injury like that to happen has got to hurt. This injury affects our team the most since he's a starter as well

Thank you Phat, for adding some semblance of rationality, humanity, and compassion to this occasionally disturbing thread.

Just to review, Reggie Smith was looking really good in training camp before he went down with this cartilage issue. Not good for him, not good for the team. The Niners were actually lucky that Goldson hadn't yet signed with New England so the timing worked out. Let's hope R Smith can make a complete recovery soon and add some solid depth to an improving secondary.

Cheers!

He should be back for the last pre season game to test out the knee, or week 1 at worse.

DAMN
He seems to be a very promising player, with a chance to be something special. Hopefully, he recovers soon.
He could be ready in 2 weeks if needed. OL Mark Schlereth had is meniscus surgery on a Monday morning and played that Sunday.

Tavaris Jackson had Sidney Rice in Minny and still stucked.

Whatever they do it will be less of a surprise to Harbaugh, despite the fact that it will be his first game, then it was to Singletary and crew. Whatever happens, I think it is safe to predict that he won't be thanking Pete Carroll afterwards. What's up with him anyways.
Having 2 starting caliber free safties that have experience playing cornerback is a great thing. Our secondary has been upgraded this year.
