I still don't get it...it seems like we have all these QB's coming out of college that were great shotgun QB's and how it won't work in the Pro's! To me it seems like a shotgun position would be so much better so that the QB can see & read the defense better & adjust before the snap.
Why is being under center for a Pro QB suppose to be so much better? All i can think of is the play action...but you can do that from the shotgun too!
I guess my point it AS & CK were both shotgun QB's that can't adjust to the pro style offense and to me...football is football...either you can play, or you can't! either you have "IT" or you don't!
thoughts? suggestions? critics?
Happy Weekend my 49er faithful brotherhood!

Harbaugh uses quite a bit of shotgun if you go watch some Stanford highlights.
We all know Alex excels in the shotgun, and we all know Harbaugh will use his player's strengths in his offense, so....

i was reading some where on stuff joe montana said and he said he preferred under center cause when your in the shotgun you have to take your eyes off of the defense and receivers for a split second and when your under center you never have to do that.

It also takes away the threat of the running game.

It's the speed of the nfl game that turns good college QB's to crap not where they line up.
A good college QB can fit a pass in a 4 yard hole and be all good. That same pass gets picked off in the NFL.

Much harder to run the football under the Shotgun. Obviously there's a place for the Shotgun, probally going to pass out of it 50% of the time, but in I really think you have to balance in order to maximize success.

Steve Young also said that timing was everything in the WCO and playing out of the shotgun threw off that timing.
I don't think you can win all out with the shotgun but it's proven to be effective in the right situations and personnel. The Patriots, Jets, Giants, Colts use it well. With regards to the running game, just screen it out to the flat.
I was wondering the same thing as the OP...why we draft shotgun/gimmick offense college QBs than those guys in the pro style that can work under center and understand that timing. I dont know...i like the idea of Kap just sitting back and slinging it around, but that's also not the WCO. It was never about armstrength, but accuracy, timing, touch in the short game. Smith and Kap don't seem particularly adept at those things. I miss that well oiled machine we used to call an offense.

Under Center is always the advantage and a must for running the WCO. Outta the Shotgun your offense becomes one-dimensional.

under center is good for really quick screens and play action. shotgun is good for passing but doesn't disguise very well

Shotgun is MUCH better for Alex. Colin maybe too. Obviously we need to be balanced and run too. But our team excels more at shotgun. So instead of trying to fit a round peg in a square hole like the past why not go with it?

I think Harbaugh will initially use quite a bit of shotgun in his system (Playing to the strengths of his QB), however, as time go on and Alex and Kap's technique from under center improves, you we see it balance out more. Eventually 60-40 or 70-30 under center IMO.

The league is adjusting to a more Shotgun league. Last year Rodgers threw the ball 307 times under Shotgun and 262 times under center.
They had a pretty sh*tty rushing attack for most of the year, I'm hopeful we're closer to 50%.

The key is diversification. Play from under center and shotgun. Keep your opponent guessing.

It would also help to have some WRs we can spread out. Wonder if we'd try VD as a WR? Maybe in the slot?
