The Genius Of Bill Walsh

Every great "dynasty" (1960s Packers, 1970s Steelers, 1980s/90s 49ers, 2000s Patriots) and near-dynasty (1970s Cowboys, 1970s Vikings, 1990s Rams) of the era is represented on the list, except for the largely overrated Cowboys of the 1990s -- a group that went better than 12-4 just once.

But one dynasty loomed larger than the rest.

Three teams in the top seven belonged to Bill Walsh. This cluster of San Francisco teams proves that the great genius Walsh, as Cold, Hard Football Facts have noted, was not that he popularized the West Coast offense. No, the great genius of Walsh was that he popularized the West Coast offense while creating arguably the greatest (and certainly most underappreciated) defensive dynasty in history.

For 17 straight years, the 49ers never surrendered more than 300 points in a season and they consistently produced very low Defensive Passer Ratings, usually among the very best in the NFL. We discussed this phenomenon a couple years ago and more recently this spring, as it related to Ken Anderson's Hall of Fame cred.

The fact that three of the top seven teams all come from the same organization in the same brief period of success is amazing.

Let's put it into statistical context: the 49ers won five titles not because they had Joe Montana and Steve Young. The 49ers won five titles because they had Montana and Young and consistently paired these great passers with the best pass defenses in football.

WOW that is a great stat less than 20 points a game for 17 YEARS STRAIGHT!!!! that is almost as impressive as the offense. Wow again. we did have the best secondary ever imo in 84-86 range..and the great secondary play and defense play continued through 97...just sick.

Best secondary EVER? You do realize the 49er pass defenses in 84-86 weren't even very good, right?

Ronnie Lott was playing so poorly at corner in 1984 (due to injuries) he had to be moved to safety in 1985. Dwight Hicks had to play out of position at corner, and that basically ended his career. In 1986, Eric Wright was out for the year with the torn knee ligaments. Rookies McKyer and Griffin were now the starting corners.

NY Jets of the last 2 years take this one.

Here you go again. The niners SENT ALL 4 PLAYERS TO THE PROBOWL. I REPEAT, THE NINERS SENT ALL 4 OF ITS PLAYERS IN THE SECONDARY TO THE PRO BOWL. That has NEVER BEEN DONE......EVER.....and the jets sent 1....I REPEAT THE JETS SENT 1.

You just keep getting owned. the jets safeties are good at best and cromartie was the one getting burned last year. The Jets only have 1 GREAT player in their secondary. The niners had 1 safety that was probably the best of all time or at least top 3 and the other 3 members were very very good. You know nothing about offense and now you are even worse off when comparing defenses....JUST LEAVE.....hahahaha the jets

If you had any football knowledge you would of said the raiders secondary in the 70's and then at least that one could of rivaled the niners in the 80's.

By the way this niner secondary held Marino to NADA in the superbowl....the same team that DESTROYED the great bears D....and the following year Whipped the Mia again WITHOUT MONTANA and Marino threw what 4 ints against the best secondary of all time.....thats what i thought.

As willy wonka said its all there black and white clear as crystal YOU LOSE YOU GET NOTHING....GOOD DAY TO YOU SIR

COMO WHAT??? knowledge or talking out of a horses you know what....the knowledge to say the jets had the best secondary with only one cb on their team. Average safety play and cromartie was suspect. Manning tears that secondary up regularly as well as what brady did to them in the regular season....at least the playoff game was a better game for the tourched secondary.

The 80's niners had 4 probowl players and held marino to a horrible game and the year after destroyed him.......No jets team could of even came close to that, its like youre taking crazy pills......i invented the piano neck tie...WHAT have you done....NOTHING.

That's his opinion, not his seeming knowledge of the subject. He at least brought Lotts move in to the discussion and commented on the other DB's. So again, I'll give him credit for looking at the history of the team, but I don't agree with his conclusions.

And before you spend too much time arguing with him, you should probably check his profile.

Thanks Otter....you are the man. I apologize for ever doubting you....but that guy was insane to say the least.

I still cant believe the the 89 niners rolled up 41 points on the best D in yards allowed minn, 55 points against the best D in points allowed and held the rams to 3 points and the rams were very good offensively....and thats just offensively. I dont think another offense in the history of the nfl could of done that. But then again we had Montana rice taylor craig rathman jones and a great OL.

Also the 89 niners ON D were 3rd in points allowed (only 1 point behind #2 position NYG) and fourth against yards allowed.

To me easily the best team and most dominant unstoppable team in the history of the nfl. I would say the 76 steelers were second only because they were not great on offense....terry bradshaw was an average qb and the steelers secondary wasny great eithe....just where the niners are at their best against the pass and against pass defenses. All that Steel curtain wont really be as effective against quick slants and passes.

Heres to the 1989 niners the most dominant team ever!
