It's not about "them" picking before us - it's about us having a better chance at a player like Peterson. Imagine Peterson getting picked at #6...and 49ers fans can say "Well the Browns just got a shutdown corner for the next 10 years, but dang at least WE beat the Cardinals in that meanigless game last year."

i dont imagine cleveland picking peterson at 6, after picking haden in the top 10 last year, if cleveland stays in that slot they picking someone else
Winning > Losing.

You can have your cake and eat it too.

Like all the posters who wanted the 49ers to throw the last few games the other year. So we could draft the cant-miss franchise saviour. Reggie Bush.

End thread.

This!

Moreover, I love the fact that we can stick it to Darnell Dockett and the tards.
It's a simple rule... never hope that your team loses games.

It's a shame that this needs to be said.

big difference. We still had hope for the season then. Cards game was completely meaningless with the exception of draft position.

Hindsight is hindsight. Just like you can say if we lost to the Cards this would have happened. Valrod can say if they beat the Falcons then something else could have happened. it's all hindsight. The results are different but it's the same premise.

its speculative what would have happened in his example. Teams wins and losses have ripple effects. The Arizona game is not speculative. We know exactly what the effects of that game are in terms of draft position.

So you are advocating evaluating a season based solely on draft position? Last game can be used to evaluate players and coaches.

You play to win the game

I never advocated that the players/coaches throw the game. I also never said that the only value to a final game in draft position. My Question remains, meaningless win (RE: playoffs) or a slightly higher draft position?

As a fan I felt conflicted on what outcome I wanted in that game, months latter I’m still on the fence. I thought it would be an interesting topic to discuss.

Nobody said anything about throwing games...Noway the team should be throwing games for any reason.

But me as a fan would have liked a better position in the draft rather than a meaningless win against a bad team.

U have to look at the second round too...38th pick instead of the 45th pick.
A lot of stupid here......... How much extra will a #5 cost???? probably as much as a decent backup. Theres no guarantee in drafting. Plus Peterson may still be available.

If the Panthers could trade out of #1 they would but there are no takers. Its too expensive to draft early. Thats why you always see the same teams drafting early...It screws you on the field. Sure it sells jerseys but thats not the point.

Right now the Panthers almost have to take a QB. They need to spark interest in there terrible team(which beat the niners) Also you cant lock that kind of money elsewhere.

Its already been stated...You play to win the game!
One thing to consider: The Cards game happened after a coaching change. Playing that game full tilt allows the organization to evaluate how much difference a change in environment had on the current players. Plus, winning a game and having fun doing it probably helped put the players into a more positive mindset in looking forward to next season.

Other than that, if the difference between drafting 5 verses drafting 7(and whatever the second round spots are) dooms your franchise, your franchise was doomed already. Dareus, Peterson, Quinn, Fairley, Miller: one of these players should be available to us at 7. ANY of these players will help this football team. Heck, if the 6 in front of us fall in love with the QBs or WRs, we could have our choice of 2 or 3 of them.

I like Pat Peterson, too. I'd love to see him there when we draft. If he's not, we move on.

Gimme the win. Always.

Not sure I get the drift on this question, but let me try.

We do not play games to win them. We play games to set-up our draft position for the following year.

So in a perfect year, we loose all sixteen games and are guaranteed to get the number one pick.

Last year, Green Bay was really stupid.

I just hate this crap, (remember the Bush Bowl).

The team should play to win each game. Fans should want the team to win each game the team plays.

In fact, the perfect season is winning all sixteen games, and picking last in the draft.
so sad....as football fans the whole point of having a team is to watch them win, even if it doesn't mean s**t. i'd trade 1000 wins for a 1000 less draft picks

Now the Niners have to consider trading up from 7 to 2 with Denver if they believe Gabbert is their guy.

Negative ghost rider. No qb is worth a 1st round especially trading up for one. Defense 1st qb in 2nd or 3rd. Going from 7 to 2 would cost way too much.

So would you trade that win for Arizona's draft position?

I'm just hoping it's all good from here!!! And that was the last of that for a while

Gabbert isn't their guy.. I hope not anyway.
