Fangio not impressed by Lawson (per Glenn Dickey article)

Something I wrote elsewhere this morning... figured why not here too.

Manny sets the edge VERY well, and he and Sopoaga typically make Willis and TKO very happy fellas. I'll throw Franklin in there too, for the most part. Where we struggle... and this can be argued with ability vs discipline... is on the Justin Smith and WOLB area more times than not. Sometimes, it is a matter of Justin +/or Haralson/Brooks/LaBoy not staying gap disciplined in their pursuit of the QB. (same goes for awareness on murderous screen passes to that side)

Manny is quick when committed to blitz, and he runs the arc as well as anyone. Unfortunately, opposing QBs tend to have more pocket availability than we tend to... so QBs can just step inside nice and cozy and make Lawson's attempts less than successful on paper. Justin Smith and RayMac can sometimes get penetration, but sometimes it's at an angle where the QB can step in and away from anyway. The blitzing ILBs can often get penetration inside, but we don't send them all that often to begin with. Not often do we collapse the interior pocket enough to make our OLBs have an easier time at the end of their arc. Add to that the CB cushions, and you will see many QBs pass the ball to their 1st/2nd read in 3 seconds. That will also take away from a pass rush. When we are not in huge CB cushions, our CBs play off-coverage anyway, and just turn and run with receivers. This also doesn't help us on those deeper completions, as it gives receivers free reign to put the nasty double moves on our aggressive minded DBs.

Anyway, bottom-line: Is Manny a great pass rusher? No, I can't say that he is. Is he a good pass rusher that can get even better with both personal improvement + scheme improvement? Absolutely.

Was it clear whatsoever that Fangio dislikes what Manny has to offer? NO.

When an article gets interpreted by a 2nd party in this way, is it clear and accurate? NO.

When Fangio is quoted about concerns over the pass rush, is that a direct indictment on the pass rushers or even an individual rusher? NO.

Meaning, there are more ways than just one to improve your pass rush. If Fangio dislikes our pass rush, maybe just maybe it's not all of the personnel or a specific and unnamed player that he disapproves of... maybe it's scheme and player utilization. MAYBE.

The 7th pick is too high for Petersen and Miller but if I was "in a pickle"I would pick Miller because he does at least have an idea of how to get to the QB which would help the secondary.I do'nt like tall, stiff cornerbacks or QB's(Petersen/Newton)coming to the league even if they did play in the SEC.Trade down from the 7th spot and we'll still get what we want either in the late 1st or early 2nd rounds.

LOL, there's a certain group of "fans" who are mad!
Manny Lawson is garbage. He's never been worth the first round selection. He's so incredibly overrated on this website it's astounding.

Until Fangio gets to see exactly what this current group has to offer other than just tape,we'll see what he really thinks when the OTA's are scheduled.Fangio likes to mix up his defensive scheme like Capers with blitz packages catered to his personnel.I think he will like Lawson's speed if nothing else and it will start his imagination going.

That certain group of fans we'll be alright when Harbaugh/Baalke make the pick. But I will go on the limb and say I do think Harbaugh likes Locker and salivates at what he thinks he can do with him.All these fans fail to remember that Steve Young was the same type of QB coming out of college(not so great arm but 4.4 speed)and even played RB his first game for the Niners.Locker showed in the bowl game against Nebraska he had a somewhat Steve Young quality.I say trade down from the 7th spot and pick Locker later in the first round then sign Josh Johnson(FA Tampa Bay).

Fangio believes in a 3-4 defense, with outside linebackers as primary pass rushers and frequent blitzes. He has apparently not been impressed by the play of Manny Lawson, now a free agent, so it’s unlikely the 49ers will try to persuade Lawson to return.

bad news i liked lawson a lot he was probally one of the best all around OLB in nfl and now were gonna have to find a replacement for him (hopefully laboy and brooks will be starters)

Well if we need to replace Lawson, then that replacement cant possibly be on our team. LaBoy I like but as a back up and I'd think Lawson would be best at second string until he studies and perfects his poistion better? Your toughts
I'm not impressed by fangio..

Lawson was one of the 49ers few stand out players in 2010.
This is great news.

Come on now oldman. Name me a player in the league who isn't gonna be a better player if he himself improves his play and the scheme around him is improved? The team can find any average OLB to set the edge in the run game, this team needs a dog to get after the qb.

Did you miss the point? Point being, how average a player can be made to look (in this case as a pass rusher) if the scheme isn't effective? If a rush LB sees the opposing QB have a pocket to step in and away from him with ease... how effective should that rush LB be expected to be? If a QB is getting rid of the ball underneath to a wide open receiver in 3 seconds or less, how effective should that rush LB be expected to be?

The big and legit gripe of Manny has been his ability to muscle through blockers... dip his hips and lean around blockers to snatch the QB. I get that, and yeah, Manny has not excelled at that. It's arguable whether he can improve that. However, I don't see how that quoted chart from PFF can be dismissed so casually.

If Manny wants a 5 year 40+ million dollar contract, sure... I'll quickly wave g'bye to him. Fact is, we don't really know how much he will be happy with. What we should know by now is that we need a legit pass rushing machine on the OTHER side of Manny at WOLB.

I don't really see anything special from Locker, but if Harbaugh thinks he's the guy then I'm willing to give him a shot. He can actually be developed, unlike a 6 year vet.

“I love Locker,” Razzano said. “People are concerned about his accuracy. I’m not. He’s going to be good in the NFL when he’s surrounded by talent. At Washington he had no offensive line and only one receiver.

Couldn't you say the same thing about Alex Smith - no offensive line and only one receiver?

The guy sounds like a moron to me.

Yeah I was going to say you could say this about any under achieving QB in the last 10 years except Leaf and Russell (more mental cases than anything else).

I am tired of losing every year with all our weapons on offense this is a no brainer. DRAFT CAM NEWTON

u di no cam wont be effective for maybe like 2 years and will sit maybe for one of them

"WE WANT CAM!" does have a nice ring to it. The key is to bring in a guy who's name is easy to chant when Alex or the vet starter starts to fvck up. "We want Blaine" sounds weird. "We want Jake" may work. "We want Ryan" doesn't work at all. Neither does Andy or Christian.

I'm telling you...Cam is perfect.

Draft him!
I am extremely skeptical of Rozanno's claim that the only calls Smith will get are from teams wanting him as a backup.

I am sure Alex wants to start. If Maiocco is right that Alex's agent told the 49ers that they are intent on testing the free agent market this year - i. e. - don't bother to make an offer to extend his contract now - this suggests that Alex's agent KNOWS that there are other pretty good opportunities out there.

I know that teams are not supposed to engage in tampering, but it is the agent's job to know what interest there is out there, and there are ways that teams get the word out to agents. If Alex and his agent thought Razanno was right, they would cut a deal with the 49ers now because it would be a place where Alex would have a good chance of starting next year.
