Singletary did one thing right in his entire coaching career...he somehow awoke Vernon Davis into a possible hall of famer.

Nolan tried to do the right things, at least the first 3 seasons, then he totally lost it
Singleteary is pure heart, sadly
Sing wasn't HC material IMO, the front office was forced to take that direction 'cause the results.

Nolan brought in some talent, and managed the change to the 3-4. He was a slimy dirtbag, as evienced by throwing his players (not just Alex) under the bus, so I'd say he was the better coach, but a worse person. Singletary was a big brother and motivational speaker who seemed to think that he was tough enough to intimidate the NFL into succumbing to his will. Not easy to do from the sideline. He was a terrible head coach, and in the end he went back on his promise to fire himself if he didn't get the job done.

It is a tough call. Singletary did soooo little with sooo much more than Nolan. Howevver, Singletary should have never been a head coach. He did the best he could, but was incapable of producing because of his lack of knowledge of the X's and O's. It was a learning experience, and I would not be suprised to see him as a HC in 5-7 years, with a much better understanding of staying away from offense.
Nolan inherited a ridiculous roster and turned it around, but never produced a winning season. He got just a little bit better each year, but then failed miserably in the end. He also drafted Alex Smith...
I think it has to go to Nolan, because Sing was practically given the job and put in a position that he had no business being in. Sing also lit a fire under Vernon's behind, but Nolan has not produced a whole lot in any of the drafts.
With a good GM, Nolan may have done much better.
With a good offensive assistant/OC, Sing may have been much better.
Nolan's mistake started with the hiring/promotion of Hostler as OC. Granted that Norv Turner leaving really late made it a desperate situation, but there were over-the-hill guys or hungry young talents who would have been much better than Hostler who had no experience calling offensive plays.
One of Nolan's traits that turned out to be his biggest undoing was his lack of coolness under fire despite his outward demeanor. When the team struggled in 2007, instead of calmly analyzing the situation to come up with the right solution, Nolan lashed out at everyone, reducing his credibility to close to zero by the end of the season. In 2008, his inability to understand that JTO was the wrong guy after so many disastrous games proved that his confidence was shot. His behavior was the equivalent of a panicked guy freezing up at the sight of the oncoming bus.
Singletary was worse for the simple fact that he was unqualified for the job, yet he behaved as if he knew how to run a team. By the end of 2009, I had hoped that he learned enough to learn to adapt to the game, i.e. not to be such a stickler to a unproven philosophy (smash-mouth offense.) But 2010 proved that hope wrong. Game after game, after evidences to the contrary, Singletary still wanted to emphasize the run. The 49ers wore down Gore with no visible sign of success (in the first 6 games, the 49ers only had two games with 100+ yards rushing). Just incredible how stubborn the guy was given how little he understood the offensive side of the game.
I still dont see how, even if he was 100% unqualified, that he could not see that smash mouth wasn't working. How could anyone be that blind, and miss the obvious?
Not blind, stubborn. Ego is a hell of a drug.

Huh? Nolan fired one OC and Sing fired two.

I have to give him credit for that one.

this is a tough one... singletary showed promise after his interim and his first season.. but failed after that. he was very stubborn and was commited to something that obviously wasnt working... especially against the good teams. nolan kept trying different things that was working around the league but he didnt exactly have the personal or players to run it.. let alone give them the time. they where very bad in there own ways.
so to be fair lol ill rate them both equally as bad. im just happy we have harbaugh. im not praising him yet or anything but i believe he shows more promise... preperation... smarts.. coaching ability and adapting to what his players are good at... then drafts to what he eventually wants to run... but harbaugh still has done nothing or anything so pretty much what im saying is... i hope lol. im tired of getting my feelings crushed though. we will find out in time.. hopefully sooner than later... come on CBA!

The roster got better under Nolan and we went from being the worst team in the NFL to a slightly below average team. All Sing did was straighten VD out.

In Nolan's defense, I think the 2007 squad would have been VERY good if it weren't for Norv Turner's late departure (which likely would also imply that Alex Smith never would have gotten hurt)

@DennisErickson is by far the worst 49er's coach of recent memory/ history. Compared to him Mike and Mike (in the morning) were both outstanding.

I remember a quote from after Nolan left saying that his defense would get beat in that nickel BS, nobody was out of position, and they couldn't have done anything better.
Insane he kept pushing it. Nolan for sure.

When Nolan took over we were totally depleted on the depth chart, when sing took over we had a few players who were known and making plays. Nolan did more with less IMO. So sing was a worse 'coach'

this isnt even a contest. its Sing by far. like it has been mentioned before, he had no business as the head coach of ANY team. Watching the games, it was like our team wasnt coached at all. All those boneheaded mistakes, false starts, missing tackles, its all fundamental football. it was the basic stuff. sure a few mistakes happen every now and then, but it was ALL the time with our team. if pros are forgetting the basics, its on the coach to fix it. he never made any adjustments. call me crazy but its kind of amazing that this team won as many games as it did with that kind of coaching.
