Which coach was worse?

Singletary was the worst coach but Nolan had a lasting effect on the Niners he drafted the wrong player and eliminated the WCO. Singletary had no clue what the hell he was doing, and still doesn't understand how important a QB is to a team.

Worst: Erickson

Worse: Sing

Bad: Nolan

At least nolan knew his x's and o's. His problem was he didn't know how to manage a qb and maybe got a little too power hungry

really agree with this post. While I really like Singletary as a person (at least from what I've read and his passion), and yeah he has a better record overall than Nolan.... Nolan rebuilt the team from a 2-14 disaster & if the coaching change at the offensive position wasn't on such a yearly basis, he probably would have got us over the hump.

I didn't even like all the jewelry Erickson wore on the sideline. From my perspective, he was one giant embarrassment.

Time has certainly healed some wounds and not others. Nolan was a disaster and Singletary laregly had to inherit his mess. I'm not saying Singletary was great or something but Mike Nolan was terrible on so so so many levels.

How exactly did Nolan know his X's and O's better than sing? THis seems subjective. Both guys had decent defenses. Take a look at any nolan D and you will see early perfromance followed by mid to late season meltdowns.

They both got fired for the same thing. The offense sucked!!! It is debateable which one of those guys was a worse coach from the standpoint of offensive XO's. Which are the XO's that sing sucked at too.

it would have to be singletary. nolan took over a team with no talent, sing had plenty of talent to work with and all he did was yell at them

This shouldn't even be a poll. Its Sing by far IMO

I agree because I think Nolan drafted well and put successful coordinators in place for the offense with the exception of hoslter. Think about it we had pretty good coordinators with Nolan with Mcarthy, Turner, and Martz. I wish any one of those coordinators would have stayed longer than one year and it might have made a huge difference in our franchise.

Nolan's biggest downfall was his game/clock management, his prevent d, and his treatment of the qb situation.

On the other hand I can't think of what sing actually did for the niners except maybe change VD's career around and last years draft might be a good one with the iupati and the hopeful emerging stars of a. davis and mays. However i don't how much his role was in selecting those players.

Sing had all of nolans bad attributes plus his over emotion, lack of xs and os, and game planning/adjustments.

I think Nolan was likely the better of these two but really its like comparing a turd sandwich and a douche.

1.Singletary - Was just a rah rah coach, then when game plans started to fall apart he was lost in the woods.

2. Nolan - Very conservative, did not have the killer instinct to be successful and managed the clock very poorly.

3. Erickson - Good X and O's coach, but could not get his players motivated or to properly execute plays. IMO, Erickson was dealt a bad hand and was given little time put his mark on the team.

This whole transition reminds me of the late 70's. Eddie D fires Ken Meyer (Mike Nolan) amidst his first year of franchise control, hires Pete McCulley; a 4-star bulls**t artist (Mike Singletary) who ends up getting fired before the end of the 1978 season (last Niner coach to lead the team to some of the worst point/loss differentials before Singletary)... then Eddie brings in some local HC from Stanford with a ton of ideas.

It's well documented that Singletary did jack on defense. I always viewed Singletary as a "hands-off" overseer type headcoach. Nolan on the other hand, actually called the defensive plays (IIRC) and game planned on the defensive side of the ball. Singletary did none of that.

There were a few reports from the beat writers that sing would sit in on offensive meetings and give his two cents. There was that game last year against seattle where the niners were killing the seahawks and Sing was telling MJ to go back to running even when the passing was working.

Then there was manusky who felt like he didn't have the freedom to do what he wanted as a DC. He said that during his introduction (i believe) as SD's DC. Sing wasn't as hands off as he should have been.
