I recall Montana being able to win the big game with no recognizable RB or defense.

Steve Young should also consider that he choked big time in the playoffs, throwing a poor performance after the next.

This is the biggest load of crap I've ever read in the Zone.

Steve Young was always part of the solution and not part of the problem. Even Montana could not win a Super Bowl when he didn't have a top 10 defense....same is true of Young.

Oh,by the way, which year was the only year Fred Dean had his only good one? 81 (probowler, 12 sacks in 11 games)? 82 (pro bowler) 83 (17.5 sacks) or 84 (pro bowler)?

Thank you for providing evidence of Dean's dominance with the Niners. It saved me from having to do so. Lots of Zoners make statements without doing their homework...and it is frustrating for those who actually do.

The only year Montana won with sub-par talent surrounding him was 1981 when the league was still playing catch-up with what Walsh was doing on offense. The 1984 team had skill position upgrades including Wendell Tyler, Craig and Russ Francis. Then the team was fading a little before the fabulous 1986 draft came along and fueled the back-to-back run after those rookies developed into maybe the greatest single draft class ever to go along with Rice (1985 Draft) and our other HOF'ers.

Then we started to get too cute for our own good as Young suggested when we ultimately had to travel the mercenary route to get over the hump in 1994.

Part of the reason that Young and the Niners didn't win more Super Bowls in the 90s was the strength of the competition. The Cowboys of the early 90s were one of the best teams in NFL history....totally stacked with great talent, and the Packers of the late 90s had Favre in his prime and an excellent defense. The Niners of the 80s really only had to deal with the Cowboys, Bears, and Giants. Only the '85 Bears and the '86 Giants were truly great teams..

The Niners should have beaten the Redskins in the '83 playoffs but were robbed by poor officiating late. That might have been a chance for a title. Garrison Heart's injury early in the Falcon game in 1999 was another tough break.

For the most part however, the Niners just weren't as good as the teams they lost to in the playoffs in the 90s, and letting Haley and Watters go certainly didn't make them better.

Exactly.

Steve Young ran into a buzz saw called the Dallas Cowboy's of the early 90's. They were a machine of a team. Without Deion, we would not have beat them in 94. We brought in Ricky Jackson (Hall of Fame), Rod Woodson (Hall of Fame), Deion Sanders (in his prime), we jumped to a 21 point lead at home, and that was BARELY enough to take a Super Bowl from them.

Can you imagine letting Patrick Willis go to the Seahawks? Well, that's not even 1/10th as bad as letting Haley go to the Cowboys, that was an utterly devastating blow to us in the early 90's. We should have just put him on medication or shot him in the head.

Young lost Watters, and we had NOTHING at running back for two years. Hearst had injury problems throughout his career. Our secondary dropped off, Rice got hurt, then Young got hurt. Bill Walsh came back and gave us Garcia, who emerged with Owens in his prime. Then Owen's flew over the cookoo's nest, Garcia was out, and we were done. The only thing left was BY, who had to finish his career in the Nolan era.
I love Steve Young, but it's a little unfair to say that letting Haley and Watters go were "mistakes." Haley was completely unmanageable, a dozen T.O.'s in one; we simply couldn't keep him, and the loony bin in Dallas was one of the few places we could dump him. (Maybe we'd have looked again for somewhere else if we'd anticipated the monstrosity that Jimmy Johnson was rapidly building, but that's asking a bit much.)

As for Watters, we actually wanted to keep him, but Watters was selfish and demanded a contract that would pay him more than Rice. We wouldn't give him that contract, not just out of loyalty to Rice but also because the salary cap was already starting to crunch us after the spending spree in '94. So Watters got that contract from the Eagles. We simply couldn't match it.

No doubt, these were supremely talented players, and losing 'em indeed might've cost us a title or two. But it wasn't that we were blinded by arrogance. Really, we didn't have much of a choice.

I am sure 48% of the webzone believe Alex Smith would have equaled or exceeded Montana or Young with better coaching and in Montana's case allowed sit behind Steve Deberg for a year and a half.

I know there were financial concerns with salary cap issues but I'm sure Eddie D. could have circumnavigated the situation. Following the blowout of SD the 49ers lost their offensive catalyst in Watters and the defensive MVP in Sanders. For the rest of the decade they never could get over the hump.
As great as Steve Young was his gave went down a notch in the playoffs. He's like the Lebron James of quarterbacks. Has huge numbers in the regular season but just can't get it done in the playoffs. I still think that montana would have beaten the cowboys in 92 simply because joe was clutch. As for the 95 team, those b*****ds would have repeated if only they beat the falcons the last game of the season. If you guys remember, that would have clinched homefield, avoided green bay in the playoffs, and hosted Dallas in the NFC championship game who they had embarassed earlier in the year. Ehhh....

I recall him not being able to get it done in 82, 83, 85, 86, 87, 90, 91, 93, 94. Your point is ridiculous. It's a team sport. The years Montana won he had incredible teams around him. The year Steve won he had an incredible team around him. The seasons in which the 9ers did not win the SB were screwed over by dumbass calls, key injuries, key players commiting critical errors or simply having their asses handed to them by a better prepared or more talented team.

You sir, are a moron. Joe lost too. Look it up, it actually happened.
That last thought from Young stands out. We've seen other teams pay for letting key players get away following Super Bowl appearances, including when Seattle did not use the franchise tag for guard Steve Hutchinson. The Arizona Cardinals also expected to maintain recent successes better amid personnel losses

Steelers, trading off Holmes. Big ben could have used him. A guy who could open up windows and go up top and really make the big catchs when needed. I thought why watching the superbowl how ben is missing something then it clicked... Holmes wasn't playing for them, he was truly a target ben trusted and sorry hines ward isn't the wr he use to be.
