I wouldn't trust anyone as to what's in the new CBA until it's official. That maybe one of the items that the NFLPA will give in order to get something else.

I think it's the other way around. The franchise tag is something the NFL is going to have to concede in order to get the other things they are asking for. The NFLPA can say they got a win in getting rid of it and the NFL can get what they are more interested in, like lowering how much revenue that the players get a percentage of.

My interpretation of the Barrows article is that the franchise tag can be used before the current CBA expires in March. I'm guessing it is some kind of exemption.

If the new CBA gets rid of the franchise tag, it might not be retroactive.

Of course, it is all conjecture until everything gets done.

The tag can be applied before the current CBA expires. But if there is no tag in the next CBA it will mean nothing for those teams/players that used it.
We end up tagging alex, and let franklin and goldson walk.

besides nasty nate
No one and definitely not Franklin's lazy ass. He threw a fit last year when we franchised him and took the whole offseason off. He stunk early in the season. He's had one good season and I don't trust throw a big contract at him. Either he signs a fair deal or he walks.

He's nothing special.
lawson, goldson, franklin, all get small to medium contracts. Have them look in a mirrow, they are players not playmakers. PLAYMAKERS GET PAID. They are role players. And who is franklin before he came to the niners from baltimore.

Why not. Players want less years for a contract, im sure the owners will agree, but maybe ask for 2 player tags!

Were not going to get Alex 15 million bucks... No way in hell... lol

that would be the dumbess more the niners can make. let alex reserect somewhere else. he cant handle pressure. resign the other guys to sm to med contracts nothing more and let alex walk. not worth 16m wow thats crazy. more like 1 to 2 mil. garbage = alex smith
The 49ers won't tag anyone too costly. Can you imagine Franklin or Lawson making more than Willis.
Alex Smith..........need a qb to fill in while we groom/draft the future( and yes I know but there isnt anything better out there that wont cost us an arm and a leg)meaning draft picks and cash. In fact I cant think of any qb I would like to trade for.

we shouldnt use the tag on anyone....Franklin should get a long term extension of 3 years or so. Lawson is not worth it and Goldston is far from worth it.
No one...and don't give me Franklin, either. He's nowhere near worth what the top NT's in the league are making. NO good reason to franchise anyone...especially with the CBA so much in doubt.

That's not true at all. Players want long term deals that's why they all hate the franchise tag. they hate being signed for one year and be in limbo. they want the long term security.

And Franklin is worth the probable 12 million??? Are YOU Serious???
David Carr. Sure he has a contract with us already. But what if he thinks he's underpaid and holds out for more money and a long-term contract? We'd better FT him fast so at least he's locked in as our #3 QB behind a rookie QB and some guy off the street.
