makes sense... hard to get excited when the coach preaches run run run punt.

Ashley Lelie
Jason Hill
Ted Ginn

Lelie and Hill were both perpetually injured while they were here.

Ginn got no shortage of chances this year, but they all slipped through his hands.

Crabtree and Morgan will both be good if our OC is any good and if we ever get a QB better than Kolb or Orton...both of which are just good enough to lose a game for you.
Member Milestone: This is post number 600 for prime21.
Crabtree=in, Ginn=stick to returning kicks, Kyle Williams=slot, Josh Morgan=last chance. bring in a solid guy to push the envelope such as a hot rookie or a FA like Lance Moore or Sims Walker.

As poorly as the QB play has been, the receivers have been worse. The only half way decent receiver the 49ers have had since Owens left was Isaac Bruce, and though he was a HOF route runner, he had slowed to the point he was no longer much of a weapon.

In that same way that good things bring other good things, bad things bring bad things. Receivers that don't run precise routes on time make it impossible for a QB to throw a route on time. QBs that do not throw the ball to a precise spot make it impossible to for a receiver to know where to run.

It has been the classic chicken/egg story at every level. The correct answer is BOTH.

EDIT: In addition to a QB, I expect the 49ers to draft at least one additional WR. Crabtree is the only receiver worth keeping and that is only because of his draft position. So far he has performed on a par with a 4th round pick. He has been a part of the problem, not a part of the solution.

Or the playcalling..

run run go for broke on 3rd and long punt

run run screen pass punt

run run run punt

swing pass, run run punt

You stole the playbook!!!

The QB makes the receiver, just look at Brady and Manning. It's not a coincidence every receiver for those teams produces, it's the QB.

A HOF QB DOES make a difference, however, a lot of teams have won big games that did not have HOF QBs.

It is also important to note that his year when Indy had a lot of injuries at the receiver positions, even the great Peyton Manning was not able to throw the second stringers open. Even he could not turn junk into jewelry.

That was a tiny span in his career. So what if he had a period of 5 or so games where he performed well below his standards? It happens. The main point is that guys like Manning, Brees, Brady, and others will make their recievers look much better than they are.

Austin Collie? Pierre garcon? Lance Moore? Devery Henderson? Deion Branch? Julian Edelman?

I could name so many more. The point is that none of these receivers would even be half of what they are today with those QBs throwing them the ball.

I don't care to discuss which ones are above 50% QB v WR or below. There will always be some grey area.

For the sake of understanding, here are the QBs who definitely will make receivers better. In my view, there are only 4 +: (in no particular order)
Manning
Rivers
Brees
Brady

Rodgers is a half step below these 4 but better than any below.

Here are some that are 50/50: (they depend on receivers as much as the receivers depend on them)
Ryan
Flacco
Roethlisberger
Vick
Romo
All the rest are just average or below without superior play by the WRs.

So we might discuss a player here or there moving up a group or down a group, but those 10 are the only QBs at this point in their careers, that are capable of really picking up the team.

FWIW, Lance Moore is the best receiver in the league that no one has heard of...yet.

I think with the wr coach gone they will improve automatically a bit. then with us getting a qb that will help so i say tree, ginn for sure. harbaugh's wco will be awesome with that speed with davis and ginn and the abilites of walker and tree. and maybe draft one in the 3 or forth round. morgan needs a new deal and he is gonna want number two or plead the case of one money saying that his numbers were high.
GREG SALAS from UH! Slot receiver that would be a big impact player.....TRUST.
Too bad we didnt get Devon Bess when we had the chance.

I'm going to try and list as many receivers as I can think of who've tried and failed in the Niners system in the past and thusfar. This will probably read like a Wall of Shame:

Michael Crabtree - Jury's still out...
Antonio Bryant
Brandon Lloyd

Sullivan's Angels - Receivers who got more reps than they deserved because they tickled Sullivan's funny bone. Not because they were fast or caught the ball particularly well.
Arnaz Battle, the Epitome of Mediocrity
Curtis Conway
Taylor Jacobs
Brian Gilmore
Josh Morgan
Darrell Jackson
Dominique Zeigler

Sullivan's Sh*t List - We'll never know what we had in these guys, or maybe we will now that he's gone. They all got the same treatment as Brian Westbrook did this year. No opportunities whatsoever. I think Lelie had like 7 passes thrown at him all year.

Ashley Lelie
Jason Hill
Ted Ginn

Don't forget Johnnie Morton.
