Yeah Im not happy about that at all. Manny is one of the best cover OLBs in the game and he is a beast against the run. Why not re-sign him and actually go after a pass rushing OLB on the other side of him. Haralson and Brooks are more of a problem than Lawson, by far.

I mean I get the whole "report just the facts" journalism angle, but for me it's too PC. It might as well be a 49er press release signed off by Jed York.

I'm sure most of you will disagree, but really its just my opinion.

Well there are two types of journalists, not sure what he is supposed to be. There are those who editorial writers and can be opinionated as they want usually there is one who is con another who is pro and then those who write and say things that must be based on facts, which are so to speak beat writers.

Q: What is with your love for Kolb? Your always saying the niners should get him. What has he proven? he looked horrible this yr. @etfuller
My response: Sorry to disappoint you, but I really have no emotional attachment to Kevin Kolb, the Eagles' backup to Michael Vick. But if you look at which quarterbacks might be available for the 49ers to pick up (once there is a new collective bargaining agreement), then Kolb immediately comes to mind. But there's another factor here. I expect there to be some sort of work stoppage. So any trades or free-agent activity will probably happen after the draft. If the 49ers choose a quarterback with the No. 7 overall pick or even in the second round (they have the 13th pick of the second round), then I would not expect them to trade for a players, such as Kolb, who conceivably could be the long-term quarterback. If the 49ers invest a high draft pick, they would likely try to go with a stop-gap quarterback who is familiar with the West Coast offense -- such as Matt Hasselbeck. But if they don't get that player in the draft, then they're going to have to be aggressive with a trade or spend some money in free agency.

If im not mistaken teams with same record flip flop draft number in each round. Since several teams were 6-10 we start with 7 in round 1, then 13 in 2nd round, and I beleive back to 7 in 3rd. Correct me if im wrong though.

this.

also, i would rather re-sign Lawson than Goldson, but I'm sure there's going to be a big $ difference between the two.

Yeah. Just because Lawson was a first round pick dosen't mean he compares to JP!

Same!

I agree, I feel he will get paid by a 4-3 defence. Considering how much TEs are being utilised a "shut-down" LB who can cover and is stout against the run will be a hot commodity for a 4-3 team.

Actually, since he got this new job, I felt he's been a little more opinionated.

But I appreciate his and Barrows' "just the facts" approach. They're much more objective than the other reporters who follow the 49ers. Many of us scoffed when Maiocco predicted a 7-9(?) finish for us. He seems to have a very accurate understanding of the team.

When rumors fly around (like in Harbaugh's hiring process), I'll trust those two over anyone else. They have that credibility with me.

Your just looking for an excuse to use the new smilies. I do share that fear as well though.
I just think it's interesting that it appears quite a few coaches did not like the way Sing ran things.

I'm beginning to also see the reason for hiring his ex-teammate and his, what was it, nephew. He probably needed some NARCS to find the rat.

It also seems as though he didn't care for any input from the coaches i.e., assistants wanted Alex to start over Troy. The decision to start Troy vs the Rams in week 16 was probably what snapped everything considering Alex has had a lot of success against the Rams.

This could not be further from the truth. If you listen to the Balke interview (he used to be an OLB), he noted the #1 responsibility of an OLB in the 3-4 (both SAM & WILL) are 1) Get after the QB and 2) Set the edge and 3) Dropping back in coverage (insignificant really). Manusky was azz backwards. In fact, his third down predictable pass rushing specialists in Brooks & LaBoy combined for 10 sacks (even with LaBoy injured at the end of the year) and Manusky's STUD starters only had 6.5 despite more than 2/3rds of the snaps and Brooks/LaBoy only pass rushing in telegraphed personnel packages. Brooks also had, in limited snaps, the 3rd most tackles for losss on the team which is a true indication for setting the edge b/c you have to diagnose the RB play, fend off you blocker and tackle the RB for a loss. He also had a pick and should have had a couple more.

When Fangio gets here, the premium will be on guys such as Brooks and LaBoy who can get to the QB first, set the edge and occasionally drop bck in coverage. It will also mean they will be playing some TED & MIKE to attack various weaknesses along the o-line, overloading blitzes on the inside/outside, etc. All FOUR linebackers will be pass rushers and attacking and dictating offenses on just about every single down...not just predictable 3rd downs!

No more will you see this soft crap of our OLB's deep in coverage while the QB has all day to survey the field. Lawson has NEVER fit as a 3-4 OLB and he will be best served on a 4-3 defense...after losing about 15 pounds to get his speed back (he's slow now)...and on another team.

Let him go and draft JJ Watt from Wisconsin to replace him.

Watt is going to be a 3-4 DE, not a 3-4 OLB. Watt is 290 pounds.
I thought Suggs was close to that.
