The San Francisco Chronicle's David White reports the 49ers have decided to promote VP of Player Personnel Trent Baalke to the newly created GM position.
Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area confirms. NFL Network's Michael Lombardi reportedly turned down an offer to work under Baalke in a lower position. CEO Jed York put a rush on the decision because Baalke will be needed to interview head coaching candidates, specifically Jim Harbaugh, on Wednesday. Per the San Jose Mercury News, Harbaugh remains the heavy favorite and he has "signed off" on Baalke as general manager. Barring a last-minute surprise, Harbaugh is expected to be named head coach on Wednesday or Thursday. Jan. 4 - 9:03 pm et
