He had two good games because nobody had any tape on him. Since then, he's been worse than any other QB in the league. In his last three games he's been worse than Alex ever has been (since his rookie season, which was almost this bad). The biggest knocks on Alex are his indecisiveness and his short accuracy problems. Troy Smith is much worse in both of these regards.

This is yet another case of guys who have had an ego clash only to realize that they actually agree with each other. In this case it was my ego that caused the problem.

Totally agree with your post... except I think Troy has at least been better than Jimmy Clausen, hasn't he?

It's not because I think Troy is a bad quarterback by nature, just that he needs to have a whole offseason and special schemes if he is going to be effective sustainably.

Alex came back because he "knew the entire playbook." He comes back..does pretty well...then was ineffective against San Diego (which was, by all accounts, expected). I don't think Troy would have had a better game. Maybe more shots down field, but whether you lose by 24 or 4...we still lose.

Look, I have nothing against Troy Smith. I fully supported benching Alex and starting Troy earlier on. But in this case...I think this is kind of a hypocritical d1ckhead move. I don't think Alex did anything to necessarily DESERVE to be benched. Against PHI...yes..absolutely. Against ATL...yes. But why now? Obviously it isn't because "Troy gives us the best chance" because he would have said that.

Again...this has nothing to do with Alex or Troy or David or Nate. This situation as a whole...is just ridiculous and laughable.

Anyway...go Troy....go 49ers. Good luck and god speed. You'll need it with Sing as your Coach.

Alex may know more of the playbook---but in the actual games Troy actually does more varied throws than Alex---in terms of long, short, medium, slants, rollouts etc.

Alex is more of the vanilla short throws over and over and over.

Troy is 3-2 as a starter Alex is 2-7 as a starter.

if Troy is just plain bad in the first half--Singletary will play Alex in the second half---no doubt.

I don't understand why people keep saying this. Lets look at the games for Vernon under Troy.

DEN- 1 catch 12 yards. He injured his ankle in the 1st Q and was out for the game.
STL- 4 catches 79 yards. He had a good game and also had TWO TDS called back.
TB- 1 catch 3 yards. This was a terrible game. IDK why we didn't pass it to him
ARI- 2 catches 32 yards. We were running the ball all game. Troy did miss him for a td, though.
GB- 4 catches 126 yards. A great game. Troy also hit him in stride for a 50 yd bomb which Vernon dropped.

SO whats with all this, 'troy doesn't throw it to Vernon' talk? I don't get it...How about last game when Alex threw it to VD ONCE for 4 yards...

Remember, I'm not comparing the two QBs, just that Troy does throw it VD. IMO, none of our QBs pass it to VD enough.

I am very suprised at this move. Alex is the "safe bet" and probably won't make killer mistakes. If we play decent offense and great defense, Alex could win the game.

However, because I am biased, I am happy that we should never have to see Alex see the field again. Hopefully Troy has worked on throwing the ball away if nothing is open or not over-throwing his recievers. He throws a much prettier deep ball, so the offense should a least be a little more interesting...

Yeah, the problem is not killer mistakes. The problem is Troy's inability to sustain drives. Against a team like the Rams, all we need to do is play ball-control offense and let the D and ST do the rest.

I agree with your assessment. Since Singletary hasn't officially announced the starter, this just might be an okie doke move by Singletary by having the Rams prepare for Troy and then insert Alex as the starter on game day. If not, then I agree with the others that Alex will be the QB by halftime when we are down two tds.

Now Singletary knows the tough decision Bill Walsh had to make:
