I think he is an athlete who was head and shoulders above the talent level in college, and still does not realize the his talent is only average in the pros. His route running is very sloppy. He rounds off his cuts and use head fakes when most WR coaches frown upon unnecessary movement. At this point he doesn't play the game fast. Although, I think he has kept up his end of the bargain being an effective blocker on run plays. If he pulls the TC no-show routine next year we will know he is not worth it in the long run.

Agreed. Crabtree has been a clear disappointment this season. His greatest asset coming out of college was supposed to be his hands, but so far, he has shown to be very unreliable - with either Smith at QB.

His route running needs a large improvement. Even more so when it's pointed out on television by commentators. I've been brought down to Earth about Crabtree. At this point, I can't see him as anything more than a possession receiver.

ya. he's basically where VD was a couple of years ago.

immature.

but just like VD he can go the right way, or the way of many other you know what WR's.

VD was still an exceptional blocker, with loads of raw physical talent and ability.

Crabs isn't overly fast, quick, strong, deceptive, or sure handed. Had he preformed all drills at the combine I think we would have more proof of that. He is not very good in any aspect of being a WR at this point.

He's extremlely good in the open field, and at times can make the tough catch in traffic.

Once he learns how to ru routes, he's going to be okay. I don't think he's a T.O./Fitzgerald type #1A receiver, but he can be an Anquan Boldin type #1B with time.

I haven't seen any evidence of Crabtree being good in the open field or after the catch. Like I said earlier, i still can't recall a play where he's broken a tackle this year.

Monday night against NO.
I think Crabtree can be a solid # 2 WR---probably not a # 1.
He isn't worth the big rookie contract he received and his holdout now looks very silly considering his ability on the field.

I agree. He probably thinks that Alex isnt a good QB so doesnt try or doesnt care. Maybe its something personal or maybe he just thinks Alex sucks, who knows, but he looks like a different WR when Troy is at QB

Crabtree looked good last yr when AS was playing.............i think Crabtree thinks this team sux and hes coping an attitude.

Crabtree appears to have some maturity issues and they are being reflected in his play.

It is also VERY likely that his previous history of breaking off patterns and allowing passes Alex has thrown him to bounce off his hands for picks has affected Alex to the point he doesn't trust Crabtree as much as Morgan and Vernon...and for good reason.

Alex is playing for his NFL future right now, if not with the 49ers, with another team. It is CRITICAL to Alex that he show well now that he has matured and finally has an OC that understands how an offense should run (notice the sequence). Consequently, he is not going to take a chance on his career with a guy who has burned him in the past.

So while I hope they can develop some chemistry in these few remaining practices, I will not be surprised if Crabtree still doesn't become a target very often - he hasn't earned the trust yet.

One thing he has shown is incredable timing and body control. He attacks the ball in a way most recievers dont. However, he has not been himself this year.

I believe part of it is Crabtree's attitude but I think Alex is too scared to trust Crabtree when he appears to be guarded. I happen to think Crabtree has the body skills to get most balls thrown near him but Alex has minimal accuracy and gumption to throw Crabtree open. I think Steve Young mentioned it too. You have to trust your guy to get the ball at times. I think Alex has small balls too often and that along with his accuracy hurt him.

A Smith regularly bounces balls off Crabtree's hands, shoulders and helmet; so I don't agree that he is scared to throw to him or that his accuracy is the issue. He may favor those recievers who catch the ball, but that's only self preservation. I still believe the best remedy is another really good reciever taking time from Crabtree...he may finally blossom into what we all expected. I would like to see more of a reciever rotation to see if someone else can build a raport with Smith. One major reason that justifies Crabtree's reluctance with Smith is Smith's tendency to lead recievers into hits instead of throwing them open. That has improved but may be why Crabtree is hesitant to trust him.

Well, the 49er standard - which is the standard we should be looking at - included guys like Jerry Rice, Taylor, Owens going across the middle and getting obliterated. Those guys recognized that it was part of the job.

There was also a purpose. I think Crabs has the Randy Moss attitude and the K.Johnson talent...
we could all do without his attitude but i know he'll be a pro bowler just hope he's still with the niners

“I’m going to do anything I can to be prepared,” Smith said minutes after throwing extra passes to Michael Crabtree following Tuesday’s practice. “I’m going to cross all the Ts and dot all the Is, so I know on gameday I can turn it loose.”

Looks like he and Smith are putting a little extra work in, maybe to get that timing down?

Smith Prepares for homecoming

The 49ers actually have a very tough team.
But Alex Smith is horrid, sure he had a good game.. he has those about twice a year.
But I don't see him having the time or the wide open passing lanes against this D.
We as fans need to get confident again, the Raiders are a bruising team for anybody.
Before that loss we were ready for a huge run.. and we still are. it was just a minor speed bump.

Crabtree is definitely no Dwayne Bowe, and when I think of Gore..
I think of MJD getting shut down earlier this year.. don't sweat him.
Patrick Willis is a monster, he should be our main concern.
I browsed the 9er board earlier, they have a thread calling Crabtree a bust.
They also seem to think we still have major ST issues and that's how they'll win.. lol

See what you guys do.. SMH [facepalm]

Crab has talent I just don't think he or Josh Morgan are a #1 wide out.....But a great QB makes average or run of the mill wide outs look great....Anthony Gonzalez, Brandon Stokley...Julian Edelman....Wes Welker became great in NE, he wasn't special in Miami....QB solves a lot of small issues....our focus should be on the signal caller not the recievers...

Did you know that Crabtree has more targets than Vernon Davis?

Less receptions.

More drops.
