Disappointing, sounds like it's permanent.

SAN FRANCISCO -- Safety Reggie Smith was eased into the action last week, as he began to get more playing time than rookie Taylor Mays.
On Sunday, there was nothing left to interpretation. Smith made his first career start and played the entire game. Meanwhile, Mays' contributions were almost entirely on special teams in the 49ers' 21-0 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Candlestick Park.
"Reggie got into a rhythm, and he was playing pretty well, and we just didn't want to disrupt that," 49ers coach Mike Singletary said.

YES! This is the first step in my ideal coverage scheme! Now to replace Goldson with Mays and use a cover six scheme with Clements as the man-coverage guy! One more step to glory!
Mays must be sad. Kid works so hard.

He will be taking over for Goldson once he leaves.

I guess Pete Caroll was right after all when he didn't draft Mays when he had the chance to?

Based on the outcome of the game it was one of many brilliant moves made by the brain trust.

i think Mays plays well and if anyone should be replaced its Clements. that fool gets tricked so easy and when he actually does something he messes it up. either way defense cord sucks, always calls bad plays and its the players skill that keeps the def alive no one else. so if any of the coaches takes credit for defense when they play good they can go suck a walnut.

Six weeks to go. It is time to play both Mays and Smith together, and see if this combination works better than Goldson and ___________.
Smith at FS, Mays at SS, and see how it works out. In a pointless final six weeks, we can at least give the new coaching staff something to look at on film.

Mad Dog is right about it being important for the team to test its talent. But, like Nolan, Singletary is in desparate survival mode, and he will play whoever he thinks best helps the team win.

Exactly. He has to win, or get the boot. What is shocking is that he still believes that Rachal gives him the best chance for success. Number 62 is painful to watch.
