Which Smith should start Week 10?

I was also thinking this but I have completely changed my mind. It would be far more difficult for Singletary to bench Alex during a game because his play is always in the Gray area where it's easy to blame other players if nothing is working out because he performs it as scripted.

On the other hand, Troy was already a backup and it would be much easier to bench him and put in Alex if Troy isn't playing well*.

*Not playing well = turnovers and absolutely 0 production or worse than Alex has shown.

Oh, and as to "if Troy fails, then a healthy Alex can step back in with no drama"; NFW! If he fails we go to the next guy. I pray never to have to see Alex under center for the 49ers again! The experiment has failed. Get over it. He had his chances and gave us 1 win in 7 games. Troy, 1 for 1.

i'm not the one talking about Alex, you are. I think you need to get over it.

this is part of my thinking as well, and what I meant by bringing back Alex, if necessary, with "no drama." I thought at first that the best thing would be to bring back Alex with a short leash but now, thinking on it overnight, I think the timing is perfect for a Troy Smith experiment. He's had one good game on short prep, and now he has the bye week to actually prepare as a starter. If he's going to get a chance this year, it is set up perfectly for him and for us--to get an accurate assessment of his potential.
Michael Vick Lite. this dude needs to start next week. he led receivers, scrambled out of problems, and had just the right amount of luck on his side. they need to talk to him about that hail mary, it was a crazy play but im sure the coaches wouldnt want him just throwing jump balls around champ bailey and brian dawkins lol. they need to let him play tho, they babied him too much and the gross overuse of Gore needs to stop. Gore had a great game but denver bleeds rushing yards so a better team would just neutralize Gore. lets see what Troy can really do
He completed 12 passes against what is probably the worst defense in the NFL right now, and they were stacked to stop Gore (which they couldn't do either). Lets not go crazy.

Alex has played some bad defenses also and the team has lost.

To add, now you have two players prepared to start rather than one (if Alex starts). If Alex starts, there will be even more drama with every incomplete pass or terrible looking execution.
NATE DAVIS!

what?

hey hey just kidding guyz.....but yeah I put Troy Smith...I want to give him some more time to show what he can do. Like I posted yesturday...

I don't think he played that great, BUT I did like how he stayed in the pocket as well as moved around the pocket...and show some arm strength on some of his passes. As well as some accuracy.

but he also didn't show some accuracy on some of his passes as well. During the game I was like "Oh Hell NA, this dude is worse than Alex, fuuuuuuu"

when I say "worse", I mean he is going to be a QB who plays better than Alex, but is just as inconsistent. I'm tired of having QBs who play just well enough for the Coaches to BS about.

so hopefully Troy is not that guy, and he will do alot better with 2 weeks of practicing with the 1st team....also, hopefully the coaches just let him play.

unfortunately, I think we are going to be a running team again....when Sing wanted Mike Vick a couple of years ago, I think in these next couple of games will see the time of offense Sing wanted...ball controlled offense with a mobile QB.

If Alex was 6-1, 5-2 or just about anything better than 1=6, then I think that your point has a lot of merrrit. However, at this point I am wondering what he has actually done to deserve another chance starting for this team? I can even see it if his QB rating was 15 to 20 points higher; at least it would how that he is part of the solution and not a part of the problem. Support from team? Gore and Vernon did what good team mates do when they supported Alex. But do you honestly think that they would step up now?
Still not sold on Troy Smith, I think Alex should start (if healthy) against the Rams, and it's based on simple logic:

1. He's so damn polite. -He's always dishing pleases and thank-you's to the staff, and never leaves the toilet seat up, even in the men's locker room!

2. He looked pretty badass in college.

3. He was pretty good at TE for the Bucs, winnings teams usually bare multi-dimensional players.

4. He's very soft-spoken. Again, this is very important for a QB, a QBs job is to please everybody and not offend them in the huddle, high voices lead to bad choices!

5. I heard he has a business degree or something, so that's definitely a 'smart-guy' trait. Something you definitely want in a QB, smarts.

6. He has a hot wife. Tom Brady has a hot wife and Brady has 3 rings, so that's got to be some sort of a connection.

7. He's pretty funny with his sarcasm on the Joe Show at 49ers.com.

8. I remember one time Smith did this really cool commercial where he bowled with foster children, and made a funny joke about how he couldn't bowl.

9. He's a good lookin' boy, the T-1000 would love to keep a picture of him.

10. Smith is like a skinny Andy Reid, he doesn't like to talk a lot at pressers but his performance speaks for itself on the field.

--
All key points, and they're undeniable, Alex Smith is easily the best QB in the NFC West, but we just haven't given him a chance to do things yet. It'd be kind've stupid not to start him against the Rams and see if he's worth resigning in 2011.

yeah, the fans have been so obsessed with Alex, with such high expectations or such low expectations, that its really hard to evaluate him objectively. He almost has to be perfect. He would do better with a change of scenery, IMO.

great job.....the part about being playing well at "TE for the Bucs" killed me, lol.

if there is anything positive about the guy, you have to add it to the list.....it is needed.
Alex Smith has proved to be injury prone. How many seasons has he been injured now?

2007
2008
2010

3 out of 6 seasons. Say what you want but on top of not performing up to par he's getting hurt a lot.
