Seems like Carr was brought in by then, GM McCloughan. Seems Singletary was never a fan of the move, but since Carr was here, he would just deal with it passively. So after Carr showed us what he's about, Mike was quick to put him on the bench. The reason he's not cut is because Mike thinks even less of Nate Davis... and with Alex hurt, we still need depth should something happen to Troy this Sunday.
Do you really take what Singletary thinks of Nate Davis with any credibility and that all of a sudden Singletary thinks Carr is a joke? To me, it seems as though Singletary does what his OC tells him. It seems as though Johnson already has an influence on what he thinks of Carr.
I will take Johnson's thoughts on Nate over Singletary's and Johnson thought highly of Nate Davis.
As for Carr, I think there are 1.5 million reasons why he was #2 and now Singletary has changed his mind of the #2 status in a heartbeat. I wonder if Singletary would also change his mind about Nate Davis soon when Johnson tells him we need to try and develop him.
Keep in mind that they released Nate Davis and still no one claimed him. Subsequent to that, he was placed on the practise squad. If he's got as much talent as people think he does, how do you rationalize the decision by all the other teams in the NFL to pass on him? The 49ers themselves signed two QB's since acquiring Nate in Carr and Troy Smith. What does that tell you about Nate Davis? There is more to quarterbacking than a rocket arm.
I really think this move to start Troy Smith smells of desperation on Singletary's part. He's had Carr as his number 2 quarterback all year, and when he's called into duty the first thing Mike does is yank him? I thought Mike Singletary was an inspirational leader? I thought he could motivate his players to play beyond their abilities. Maybe Mike needs to watch Remember the Titans and what Coach Boone did to motivate Sunshine. Instead, his now got a pissed of Team Captain C in Heitmann, a pissed off Alex Smith, and a pissed of David Carr. You tell me what's going to happen next...
Teams pass on 3rd string QB's that late in the process due to a number of reasons (3 current QB's already understand playbook or headset duties, team has already invested in developing current QBs,...). Many QB's who end up becoming solid backups or possibly starters get passed up by many teams. I'm not trying to justify why teams passed up on him because they did and that's a fact. What I am saying is that our OC wanted him and was over ruled by two guys who had ancient ideas of the offense. It's almost like they wanted guys who refuse to deviate from the script (Alex/Carr) and ruin their ancient philosophy.
Not sure how true that is.. you should check the transaction report at espn.com sometime. QBs moving around all the time. Trent Edwards didnt clear waivers and that dude sucks

Trent Edwards had the opportunity in games to show
something that teams like. Davis only has preseason which isn't much. Now you throw in Singletary's comments and that's that.

Cut David Carr and roll with Troy and Nate.

Carr was signed for one of two reasons:
(a) he was the best backup available and allowed us to run the same type of offense if Smith was hurt; or
(b) he was not brought in to serve as any backup but to provide weak competition to increase Smith's confidence.
Both of those reasons are now moot.
We obviously don't trust him to run our offense so he serves no purpose as a backup. We are starting QB#3 over him
Smith is hurt and he doesn't need confidence building. The ruse is also over now that the team has shown they have zero confidence in Carr
Carr should be cut as soon as the DEN game is over and Nate Davis elevated from the PS to serve as the backup.

Lol. Yeah Carr should have never ever been signed in the first place. We'd be better off with JT O Sullivan or John David Booty. And I'm confident that Nate Davis is not the answer.

At this point the answer to 2011 is not on the roster

I am not a Carr hater, but the guy never, ever played that well. Why not cut Carr and bring up Nate Davis to #3?
last time I checked, his career stats are better than Smith's, who is getting paid a lot more than that.

It's hard to remember why David Carr was rated as the no.1 pick in that draft.

Nate Davis got cut for Troy Smith. Until the Troy signing is deemed to be a mistake they're not bringing up Davis.
You guys just have to face it. Davis was the 4th QB on the depth chart to start the year and until we've given up on options 1, 2, 3 he's not going to see the field. We have a bye upcoming this week so if Troy sucks it up I wouldn't be surprised if we cut Carr and bring Davis up.

can you go 1 day without s**t talking an injured QB?
Just trying to point out that 1.5 million is chump change as far NFL QBs salaries go.
then why don't you say will JaMarcus got 61 million
That would be installing the middle man when we all know it's going to turn towards Alex anyways. He's just skipping the middle man.
yea, and this is NINERtalk, not RAIDERtalk
As far as money goes Alex is no where near the top of the list of top paid QB's who failed
Please name a few that made more

This is why we are not a well run organization.
I am glad Troy gets his shot. I personally have thought he deserved his chance, he earned it. He almost got traded this offseason to Buffalo but Balt backed out.
Hope he does well!

I offered no opinion on what I think of Mike's opinion of Nate. Only that it is apparent that Mike thinks that. I have no strong opinion of Nate one way or another. As for Carr, I feel that Mike was somewhat forced to accept him thanks to his GM, McC. So I think Mike always felt that Carr was a joke... but gave him a brief chance to change his mind.
I didn't say you offered that opinion which was why I asked you who's opinion of Nate would you hold more credible, Mike Johnson's or Mike Singletary because it was apparent Mike Johnson vouched to keep Nate Davis as #3. Not my opinion either, just that Mike Johnson thinks that.
I would lean towards Mike Johnson's credibility when evaluating QBs... though that could be hard for some of you, as M.J. is a fan of Nate Davis, Troy Smith, and... wait for it.... Alex Smith.
Exactly! He also stated that they would have to simplify the playbook now with Troy starting. Which means we will see a bunch of Troy handing the ball off. It's not going to be pretty.
