How that affects your question, I'm not sure.

yes but smarter? or more heart? I hate this athlete s**t argument its flawed in many levels. Players today are too soft and offense is more favored how bout that to the old school players where it literally was a dog fight on both sides. Jerry was "slow" to athletes now and no one comes close to him. Joe was skinny and not an athlete or a beast like manning was physicaly now but is the GOAT.

Players today aren't any less smart than before. Heart? Umm, I dunno how you can quantify that, but ok. The more athletic you are, the better you are at sports that require, you know, athleticism.

The average-good players from today's era would demolish the 80s.

Brooks came in after Jeff Fuller's tragedy and played well for a season but didn't last long. He was tough against the run but had problems in coverage (sound familiar?). Walter was a long-time starter at linebacker. Good against the run but not the fastest linebacker. I remember him always being a step or two behind when the Niners lost the NFC Championship to Dallas the first time. Kugler was a decent guy in the D-Line rotation for about a decade. Collie was also a decent depth guy (he may have been a starter for a few years but I don't really remember) for about five or six years on the O-line. Roberts was okay as a d-lineman for about six or seven seasons but really didn't pan out as well as many others drafted after him (he went in the 2nd and I believe was the first Niner choice) in that great 86 draft. Pollard was a pretty good special teams player and started at corner when the Niners beat Denver in the Super Bowl. He had some problem with injuries after that and also didn't last much longer.

People around here would complain that Holmgren would not go to the spread and are wasting his talent

In 86 and 87 the Niners were using Craig and Joe Cribbs and it just wasn't working. It was the insertion of Rathman at fullback and Craig to halfback that really provided the spark that helped reignite the offense. So I think it is a tough choice between Gore or Craig (kind of tough choice I would like) but I think Rathman stays at fullback.

Imagine what Walsh would have done with Rice, Davis and Taylor! Jones was great and fit that offense perfectly but I'll take Vernon.
How come I remember Romanowski and Steve Wallace starting

Am I getting old and my memory failing
Willis
VD
Gore to halfback Graig back to fullback
Crabtree rotating with Taylor
Franklin rotating in
J Smith rotating in
