I don't think it was meant to be funny when he stuck out his tongue, although to our sensibilities it certainly was a hoot. If I understand it correctly, sticking out your tongue and popping your eyes as wide open as possible is part of the Polynesian tradition of war dancing, the Haka.
It's actually pretty cool stuff. Here's New Zealand's rugby team, the All Blacks doing their traditional pre-match Haka.
