Because that would be the smart thing to do.

Because it limits our best offensive player: Frank Gore
(kinda hard to see that with his bon headed 2 fumbles tonight)

They don't like to spread them. They like it tight.

This is false. Gore has been successful in every Offense, even with Martz. Our coaching staff is just too stubborn and knuckleheaded to play to our players' strengths.

I've been saying this all season: Frank Gore is a great athlete -- give him the ball and he'll run it. Pass to him and he'll catch it. He can adapt.
Alex Smith unfortunately cannot. We need to put him in a position to win and stop catering to Gore. We are a better passing team than running team and it was supremely obvious tonight.
Unfortunately, our coaching staff doesn't know what "changes" are.

The thing is, the spread is a far more modern approach to football than the stuff we are running now. Alex's talent fit into a modern approach, and so does the rest of our personnel, but our coaches' brains do not.

Has there ever been a successful spread offense in the NFL?

A lot of the best teams in the league run shotgun a majority of the time.
