Steve Young said we have a ton of talent on offense, (right up there with the rest of the league) but in his words we have to "unlock it". Then Coach Edwards said you pay a QB to do 3 things in the NFL: Lead the team, convert 3rd downs, and run a 2 minute offense. He added that Alex looked good on Monday Night Football doing just that.

Correction: The 3 things Herm Edwards said you pay QB's for were redzone, 3rd downs and 2 min drill. But unless I heard the conversation wrong, he was s**ttin on Alex and thats why he wasnt being paid like a top QB even though he had a good game, hes been up and down and he metioned that... Dilfer was adiment about our D not being great.. Just built up in the media tobe great.

I have to agree, we have a good D, not great. We are missing a big play Safety, shutdown CB and a pass rusher. Sure we've got pass rushers, but they're hidden on the bench and nobody notices them. But I believe this D can be top 10, don't know about top 5.

Yeah, our defense is full of 3-4 role players that are in the mid-talent range (beyond our linebacker core). Our D reminds me a lot of the Pats defenses from the early 00's before they had acquired Ty Warren, Rodney Harrison, and Asante Samuel in 2003.

So next year we really need to acquire a big name FA safety, draft a demonstrative 1st round pass-rusher, and acquire a good CB in the 2nd round.

I all falls back on the fact that singletary is trying to run this team like the 85 bears and that is old school and will not work anymore. He has to change with the times or this team will never be a winning team. Why do you think that coaches don't want to come here? Because all sing wants to do is run the ball. Raye is the only coach that was willing to do things the singletary way. Thats why Linehan turned him down and the main reason Martz is no longer here. Look what Martz is doing with Chicago right now.

On Sportscenter after MNF, Dilfer said this exact thing, "Mark my words, the 49ers will have a top 5 defense when the season is done." And then he went on and on about how our D is so great. Now he says this...oh well, this is why I could care less about what these people say. Even if they've played/coached, I could care less unless they're directly involved with the team...

agreed, a great d doesnt let the opposing offense march down the field easily after your offense gets a td and especially when you need a clutch stop with the game on the line

It was down to a pass that Brees just threw out there on 3rd down and hoped the WR makes the catch which almost was broken up by Dashon.

if it was incomplete, then ....

if goldson didnt let colston run by him and have to end up chasing colston he wouldve deflected it or picked it off. colston beat him and all goldson could do is just chase him and couldnt look for the ball, speaking of goldson if he still stupidly thinks he deserves top rated fs money he can walk for all i care and i have to worries about putting smith at fs next yr

also our D is good not great we are missing a dominant saftey and a Cb i think our pass rsh id above avg

if we go 7 9, its iffy but i doubt it, if we go 5 11, for sure

The problem with young teams is that they tend to make a lot of mistakes, as they always try to do too much. Steve Young himself was in similar situation in 1991 when he took over the team. The offense was really good, but it committed a lot of turnovers, around two per games. The 49ers found themselves in a 4-6 hole 10 games into the season, and despite the great late-season surge - winning all games for the rest of the season in dominating fashion - missed the playoffs altogether.

to be fair, preventing a team getting into fg position is a lot harder than keeping from crossing goal line. other than that they did a great job as brees will rack the score given the chance.

over the past decade we've basically been a bend-don't-break d which means it's just "aight." as of late though we're strong against the run and the line has been able to bring pressure which takes a lil heat off the backfiled, but corners will continue to be our weak link until it can be addressed next spring. only then i fully believe we can be great. for now manusky just gotta keep scheming and hope we don't get exploited.

I wouldn't trade anyone on our defense. Harrylson or Lewis would be the likely candidates to be voted off the island if I we had to, but that's as far as it goes.
I even love our back ups and am excited to see what they got when they come out on the field.
I think our mistakes in the last game (which I must say I've watched 5 times on the DVR (Twice in Slow Montion)) were isolated and do not necessarily represent any specific fault in our defense. Drew Breese is a bad ass mofo. We played our ass off, and yes fell short, which WTF?
But I am more proud of these 49ers than I have been about any 49er team since probably the year Garcia and Mooch took us to a 12-4 season out of nowhere, with Plummer and Webster, Peterson and Garrison and TO, yet I feel so much more intamite and personnal with each and everyone of these current niners. I mean Josh Morgan, quietly, confidently caught everything thrown his way last game. John Taylor INCARNATE! I havent checked but does this guy have his own thread for last week, or what. He is not even close to our most flashy, talented, charismatic, gifted or badass niner but only because of Frank, Vernon, Patrick, Michael, and Yes Alex all are just slightly ahead. what a team!!! yes this defense and this team is great. we can see it, we can feel it. our 0-2 start will be the stuff of legends (ala 1994 when we got smoked by the eagles on our third game) and we will run the gammit. No let downs this year. We took our lumps hard but early and now its our time, up there its there time, but down here, its OUR TIME*, NINER TIME! FINALLY, thank you GOd this happend before the world explodes or I died, (which ever comes first)

Right, Young's record of that was 5-5. Bono's: 5-1. There sure were a lot of heated discussions during the season that the 49ers ought to trade Young. In a way, Bono served as a proxy for Montana in the Young vs. Montana as starter battle. Supporters of Bono always knew that he would simply serve to keep the seat warm until Montana returned. Montana didn't return until the last game of the 1992 regular season. But by then, Young was on such a tear that there was no reasons to rock the boat.
