In days past, a talented young QB would sit and watch for a couple of seasons to absorb it all. Aaron Rodgers is a current example of a guy who has been brought along the proper way. Steve Young is an example of the wrong way. When he first went to Tampa Bay, he, by his own admission, had no idea what he was doing. It was not until he came to SF and watched Joe Montana play and learned from Bill Walsh that he was finally able to reach HOF level. Prior to that, Steve Young was considered just another high-priced, first round bust.

It may turn out that Alex Smith is another example of the Steve Young Method. Put him in a good system with adequate tools and time to learn proper mechanics, he will do very well.

Well said.

Both passes in Mondays game that were picked were off tips. One of his two from Seattle. I have noticed this since he came into the league in '05. The ball just kind of has a knack for finding a defender.

Why do you think he gets so many tipped balls?
What do you guys think can fix this?

My Suggestion: Pump fake. Throw not only the D-Line but the secondaries to delay their reactions.

Nothing to fix. If what your saying is that Smith only throws pics 10 % when the ball is tipped... he's doing fine. Occassionally those tips come from receivers hands (which may or may not be Smiths fault - accuracy?) or it may get tipped at the line, which is not really his fault.

The two pix against the Saints did not cost the 9ers the game. The bad snap, miffed punt and fumble by Walker were more devasting than the pix (the punt was the worst... Get Adams off the PR duties). You reverse any of those plays and the 9ers are tied for first in the West.

If they ever adjust the interception stat where if it is tipped its just called "live ball recovery"

Alex would have half as many interceptions as he does now.

And darrell revis wouldn't have padded interception stats...remember, 3 of Revis interceptions last year were tipped

I have never sided with or against alex saying that he cannot be judged until he has a functioning OL in front of him. As fascinating as last game was, the question is , is it reproducible? Biggest ?? are :

will JR bring his A game? If not, and we "ram it down their throats", we lose.

will bigmike bring his A game. " " " " " " " " " "

will OL with staley, poti, AD, make the two guys around them, C and OG, block like
in NO game?

will craps be able to focus for 60 minutes?

and lastly, will alex put 2 great games in a row together, or as Kolohe says, alex has had good games and then been disappointingly terrible.

Should the OL, the HC/OC/ MJ/ solari/ and alex all plan together, play together, and then let alex take over when the game is on the line, i predict what we saw on MNF is the real alex. I give tons of credit to solari, bigRay, and esp MJ. If JR and BM could just get out of the way, i expect a W on Sun.

Here's a thot: It obviously was way better for aaron rodgers to bench sit 4 yrs behind Favre, than it was for alex to start behind some crappy coaches and no OL. With our now redone OL, can alex make up the gap created by rodgers being brot up the way he was in GB, and the horrid way alex was brot up here?

41-7(or was that zero?). Man i'd love to stick that one on KC with the roles reversed. Talentwise i think we can. Coaching proved in NO they ARE capable. To be really great coaches, and winners, BM now has to reverse the fluffs on Punts, the high snap into endzone, the 10 men on the field on O...you know, the little things that have killed us in times past, butand still remain. My gut says we get it all together, and with a few bumps in the road, have a good rest of the yr.

Lets not get crazy. Rodgers was more accurate and the more NFL ready QB on draft day. Sitting and watching Brett favre didn't MAKE him what he is now as much as you think. In fact one weakness that Rodgers has is that he hold on to the ball a little too long and when he watched Favre he saw him force balls into places he shouldn't have. If any QB relied on his talent instead of mechanics it would be Farve so I don't thnk watching Farve is what makes Rodgers, techinically sound in fact you could argue that he is that way despite watching Farve for 4 years.

If you go back and change the past and we take Rodgers instead of Alex then GB still has brett farve and we don't have as much talent because we wouldn't have been as bad as we were over the past 5 years. Also, Rodgers was playing last year with one of the worst Olines in the league and he did awesome so please don't blame the Oline either.

Maybe just maybe, Rodgers is a better Pro QB than Alex is and maybe, just maybe we made a mistake in the 2005 draft.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion. It really is a moot point anyway, we have who we have and they have who they have. Our team was really bad and no single player was gonna change that fact. Those who are Rodgers fans should just be happy for him that he didn't have to go through what Smith had to.

We don't really know any of that. It is possible that Rodgers would have been screwed up as well. If Steve Young could be messed up by starting too early, then Aaron Rodgers could have been as well. Maybe he would have been great though... you just never know. It is possible that Rodgers was just better. At this moment he is certainly better and that is one fact that everyone can agree on.

The difference is Steve was always accurate even in college, his problems of staying in the pocket and reading defenses could be solved by sitting. Alex's problem is he is not that accurate of a passer which is not a problem that can be solved by sitting on a bench and watching someone else throw accurate passes.

Also, for every QB that was successful after sitting and watching there were others who didn't do well after sitting as well. How did watching Warner help Lienart out? What's Cade Mcnown up to nowadays? What about Drew Henson who started in front of Brady in College but watching Bledsoe did nothing for him? Or hows about Brian Griese? What about good old Druckenmiller? That time watching Steve should have worked wonders? Why isn't Jim Sorgi the best QB in the league by now?

Anyways, you get the point that sitting doesn't make a QB great, it just allows he great ones to have more time to develop. Alex has had 5 years where he did a lot of sitting and watching so the time for excuses is up. He needs to get way better soon or we need to move in another direction and let him walk.

way better than what... last game? More accurate than last game? How about you bring this up again when he has a stinker of a game. Alex Smith was very accurate in college, so there is no reason to believe he can't do it in the pros as well. His problem has been consistency. His own, and that of the organization around him. I agree that this year we will see if he can be consistently good or not. IF he is not then he is gone.

Also, your point about other QB's is fine, but we are not talking about other QB's. We are wondering, since Alex has shown some flashes of being a very good QB, if it might have been better (again taking into account how much better he has looked the past year or so as compared to earlier years) to sit him like the packers did with A-Rod. Again, I am not saying that Alex will be great, because I don't know if he will, just like nobody knows what Aaron Rodgers would have done in SF.

This is an exhausted argument. The points that everything was stacked against Smith, ie poor O, poor receivers, dubious coaching, thrown in the deep end when even his college coach made the point that he needed time to grow into the system, Nolan throwing him under a bus etc etc. And Rogers had it pre-built for success.

The time for excuses is only up when he proves he is not growing in the role, AND we have a viable alternative. I think he will prove the point this year, and anyway I want a qb drafted next year. What round depends on Smith's play for the rest of the season.

Behind Favre with GB's coaches or thrown in the deep end with Dufus being the best qb you play with, and with Nolan. Hmm. Tough call.

Man you should really check your facts before trying to make an argument based upon them, Smith was not only an accurate QB in college, he was more accurate than Rodgers. As I said in my earlier posted response to you, you are entitled to your opinion, it just turns out you based it on inaccurate fact, not a good practice around here, as there are some that will check your facts to see if you are speaking the truth or just throwing your opinion out as fact.

Both were excellent college players, I think both will end up excellent pro players, one just got to start on a playoff caliber team, the other had to deal with the mess that was the '05 Niners.

this
If you want to use comp per to prove that Alex was more accurate than Rodgers then you also have to conclude that he was more accurate than peyton manning who ONLY comp 62 per of his passes compared to Alex's 66 per. BTW, peytons mere 62 per set an SEC record so I guess Alex was more accurate than every SEC QB before peyton as well. If you ever watched a Utah game you will see that a lot of his pases where screens and short passes which inflates the per as well as the system that he played in meyer's system which had some exploits defenses weanesses which had a lot of his wrs wide open in the weak mw conference. If you look strictly at at comp per ou can also conclude that Tim Tebow is more Accurate than all of th aforementioned Qb because he had a higher career percentage and even had one year where he completed over 70 per of his pasees. Anyone who actually watch watched them all play can tell you that stats lie sometimes.
