Both passes in Mondays game that were picked were off tips. One of his two from Seattle. I have noticed this since he came into the league in '05. The ball just kind of has a knack for finding a defender.

Why do you think he gets so many tipped balls?
What do you guys think can fix this?

My Suggestion: Pump fake. Throw not only the D-Line but the secondaries to delay their reactions.

1: because he is innacurate
2: nothing can fix it that 6 years hasnt already

Yeah 71.9% completion percentage is totally unacceptable, we should cut him now and you can start at QB for us, since you are the expert.

He threw 2 passes over 7 yards, that doesn't mean he is accurate especially when Wrs have to go down to one knee to catch passes when they are in position to juke out the defender IF the ball is delivered on the numbers.

smith haters seeing what they want to see rather than seeing the game objectively. I know it requires some thought and you guys don't like thinking much, but give it a try sometimes.

-Alex Smith was OK for most of the first half. But he was still just a little off, throwing high to a double covered Vernon Davis even though the other two receivers were in single coverage. He also was throwing a little bit high in his completions. But once he hit Gore in stride for a 12-yard score, he became laser accurate.

how come when NFL analysts say something good about Smith, their word is gospel, and when they say something bad about him, then they are tools and idiots who have hidden agendas and know nothing about football? I have noticed this trend very distinctly in NT.

Aren't you the guy who hung on every last word of John Clayton's critique of Smith, while totally disregarding and downplaying Peter King's words that Smith would play himself into a new contract with the 49ers??

I have never said that I didn't think Smith would get himself a new contract. On the contrary, I have always stated that my fear would be that he plays *just barely good enoug* to get one, and we continue with inconsistency. I want him to consistently play like a 6th year #1 overall draft pick or I want us to move on.

It does seem that most of Smith's interceptions (and many incompletions) result from inaccuracy rather than poor judgment. On a positive note, this indicates that he sees the field well and makes good decisions. But Smith is sometimes wildly inaccurate.

Inaccuracy is the result of inconsistency and Smith's mechanics have been called into question before. The roller coaster ride of changing coordinators, injury, and poor line play that he's experienced could certainly account for some inconsistent mechanics and the development of bad habits. The good news is that poor mechanics are to some extent fixable, even at this point in his career.

If you want to see some serious QB accuracy, check out this video of Drew Brees outperforming Olympic class archers with his accuracy at 20 yards. Brees' mechanics are so consistent that he's able to release the ball at exactly the same speed, at exactly the same angle, with exactly the same rotation speed again and again.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVoqA-LKGb4

Some quarterbacks are always going to be more accurate than others and there's more to playing the position than simple ball placement. But I think Smith's mechanics are still flawed and that he could improve his game considerably by working on his mechanics.

That's all good, but lets see how Brees mechanic is when he has a 300 pounder bearing on him or a speedy DB ready to plant him one. That bad pass to Gore, Smith had a unblocked blitzing DB. He had to throw it quick to avoid a sack.

That's exactly the point. The more fundamentally sound your mechanics, the less likely they are to break down under pressure. Drew Brees still throws an accurate ball even under pressure, as do all good QBs. Smith's problem is not that he's inaccurate per se, it's that he's not consistently accurate. He's capable of tremendous accuracy... he threw some great balls on Monday night. But from time to time - and without excessive pressure - he throws a wild one. Most of the time it's high. High passes tend to get tipped, and tipped balls tend to get ntercepted.

Oh come now Shaj, you are just as guilty of doing the exact opposite...don't go all hypocritical on us.

It was what the defense was giving, so it was easy to get into a rhythm I suppose. Balance also improved I think, we caught the defense in zones and gashed them with the runs because they were dropping back to defend the passing lanes.
I think we've been using Alex all wrong. He doesn't fit in a ground and pound run first offense. He's a guy that needs to get going and early in the game. Everytime we run run run then go for broke it never ends up well.

We need just be aggressive in the passing game and let Smith get into a rhythm from the get go.

There's been quite a few times Raye calls a 15+ yard pass for his first passing play.

When?

As I recall, the first two plays from scrimmage against the Hawks and the Saints were Gore up the middle twice.

I've said this a few times as well.

It's not that Alex excels in a spread offense, Alex excels in a vertical offense.

By the way, thanks for posting the video. That was incredible!

And I hate to break it to you, folks.. But Alex's passing average on the day was better than all of the following "good" QB's last week:

Brees
Matt Ryan
Palmer
Flacco
Brady
Sanchez
Garrard
Eli Manning
Hasselbeck
Romo
Favre
Shaun Hill (yes, even the beloved Shaun Hill).

And he was right on par with Rodgers and Cutler as well. Guys.. he didn't get his high completion percentage by dinking it around.. He actually PLAYED a GOOD GAME. For fricks sake, give credit where credit is due.

Too many times are people trying to do anything to take away credit to feed and support their own biased viewpoints.

He did have a good game and was accurate, but there was one name on your list that he didn't beat out:
Smith - 23/32 = 71.88%
Brees - 28/38 = 73.68%

The QBs that were more accurate than him on Monday were:
Schaub
McNabb
Brees
Rivers
Cutler
P. Manning

It puts him in 7th for the week, but that is some elite company. There are still some things to clean up to improve his other rankings.

-Total Yards: Alex is 9th overall
-Total TDs: Alex is 18th
-Total INTs: Alex is 9th (or 23 from the bottom is how I see it)
-QB Rating: Alex ranked 16th

Lets see how he stands next week against a weaker defense.
Pass Yds/Gm (25th)
Total Yds/Gm (24th)

I expect a better performance.

dude where are you getting your stats??

Alex is NOT 16th in QB rating he's 23rd...

NOT 9th in INT's only 1 QB in football has MORE (Flacco)... that puts him tied for second to last...

he's not 9th in yards like you say...

he's not 18th in TDs like you say...

are you just looking at Week 2 and if so WHY? looking at the whole season paints a more complete picture

once you start comparing career stats instead of a sample size of 1 or 2 games, all the comparisons to the great QBs and even the good QBs fall apart like wet toilet paper. the point is that Smith needs to demonstrate CONSISTENCY.
