They are going to go about .500 in the remaining games after this game to the break, and then play better in the second half.

HOWEVER...after seeing Singletary melt down this weekend with his TV interview, I'm not sure he can turn this thing around.. if things start off slowly, and we are 1-3 or 1-4, which could easily happen at this point.

The Niners can pull this airplane up soon, when these things happen:
1) Smith and Crabtree begin to play together. Missing much of the offseason has made them incredibly rusty in their timing.
2) Get Heitmann back to stabilize the line. When Raye calls him the "second quarterback" for the team, and the coaching staff names him team captain again, his loss is a tough one to swallow. Do not underestimate his presence for Alex Smith. This would allow the team to move Baas to replace Rachal or Iupati, or into a primary place for backup duties.
3) The OLB position is settled, and the best rotation is established. Right now, things are still in limbo.
4) The Niners remember to spread the field: They have some playmakers, but running up the gut 40% of the time is not going to work in a big-play league.

AND

5) Most importantly, FREE ALEX SMITH. Either get the play into him before 10 seconds are left on the clock, or let him line up in the shotgun and call his own plays. Don't frustrate him by relaying the message through 8 guys before it hits his helmet.

Cheers.

P.S. Soon, the Crabtree bashers are going to gush with praise. It could begin to happen as early as tonight. The kid works hard and has a ton of talent. He just needs the reps. The rest will settle itself.
As a mild Crabtree basher , I am hopeful that his little dust up with Vernon Davis combined with an embarrassingly bad game against Seattle will motivate him to play like he can. I agree with you, he is a talented player but will need some time now to get it on the field. All the lost time in TC and PS games have not been kind to the timing of the offense. It may take more than one game to begin to click however.

I heard one of the talking heads yesterday say that the way the 49ers approached pre-season games (not playing Gore, etc) is an example of why they were so bad against Seattle - not having spent the time together to get the timing down. Now it is time for on the job training.
9/12 @Seahawks L 6-31
9/20 Saints L 22-25
9/26 @Chiefs - L
10/3 @Falcons - L
10/10 Eagles - W
10/17 Raiders - W
10/24 @Panthers - W
10/31 Broncos - W
BYE
11/14 Rams - W
11/21 Buccaneers - W

12/5 @Packers - L
12/12 Seahawks - W
12/16 @Chargers - L

If we can get to 4-4 at the bye, 10 wins would still be attainable . . . but I guess that's the kool-aide talking . . . whatever.

I think we lose two more then as the mistakes become fewer a rampage ensues.

How can you say Smith has gotten worse? did you watch the game tonight? Those tipped passes were 50/50 they weren't terrible. This team just has to stop kicking themselves and making costly mistakes. It's too early to tell, but if we fall to 0-4 then it wont be pretty. Most of the good teams we play Seattle/Arizona has to play too, and were only 1 game out. If we play with the same intensity here on out we can make it a season, just gotta play better on the road.

Nobody will run away with this division . . . unless we do.
I posted 9-7 and will stick with that prediction...

- 98
Whatever record they end up having will win the division

We won't beat Philly, and I could see us losing to Denver for the pure fact that the trip is so far and their coaching staff will have them better prepared, that leaves us with a 2-6 record going into the bye week, from there, it'll either get better and we'll win 5-7 of the final 8, or we fall apart and go 6-10 or worse.
I hate to say it but I was right. 0 - 3 will definitely become 0 - 4. We've seen how well we match up against the Falcons. And it's not good. By that time sing will lose the locker room and we will be looking at 2011.

I really don't who we can beat. The rams? the raiders? Those aren't even guaranteed. I said 9-7 originally, but I have no clue anymore.

My 1 - 15 prediction is starting to look better and better all the time.

Wow, we get one win! Woo-hoo!
