I think it's funny how all of a sudden a lot of people on this board are saying "N. Davis isn't good and should be cut or placed on the practice squad".

We would have a better chance of getting A. Smith threw waivers than Davis! A. Smith has been given YEARS while Davis has shown more upside than Smith in just one year and two off seasons! No way would Davis go 1 TD with 11 int's if he started this whole year!

So if we are going to be harsh on QB's, we are targetting the wrong guy!

Nate Davis just happends to be playing like a 5th round pick at times, mean while A. Smith has played like a 5th - 7th round pick his whole career!

1st overall vs 5th rounder...?

"We would have a better chance of getting A. Smith threw waivers than Davis!"

WTF? How did this become Davis vs Smith?

That quote is about the silliest comment I have seen in a while. Even in NT where folks are suggesting to have evryone change positions and unseat the starters...

Smith struggled early in his career to be sure, but right now, he is running the 1st team offense very well.

Nate Davis on the other hand, is playing hit and miss, against the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th stringers from the other teams.

At this point there is simply no intelligent comparison. Period.

As for the patience shown for Smith early in his career, compared to the patience being shown for Davis, I have two things to add...

1. Davis is not a #1 overall draft pick who must be shown so much patience, because of a huge financial commitment year after year.

2. Many folks complained that Smith should not have been shown that much patience. Fair enough, if that is your view, to tell you the truth, I probably would have pulled the trigger on a vet a couple of years ago.

However, if you are going to say it was a mistake to show Smith that much patience, how can you now say it is ok to show that much patience to Davis?

You're talking out of both sides of your mouth...

Some people are just butt hurt because Davis has fizzled when given an opportunity to improve his stock. That is the only way that Glory would say something so utterly ridiculous. Just wait till they place him on the PS, if they do not cut him...people will be losing their minds.

No , I was speaking to the flavor of the month club. I personally think we don't have a true NFL QB on this roster!

but, but, but, Alex is developing

You know, you're right...

Nate Davis > Alex Smith

You and 0 pro football GM's would agree

seriously

and fly stop saying that sophmore year he did pretty good with 16 td and 16 int last year he proved he can play 18tds in 10.5 games thats over 27 tds t
when a qb gets around 27 tds thats pretty good

But he didn't get 27, he got 18. I know you are extrapolating, but s**t happens, he could have blown up and not thrown any in a few games, or thrown a bunch of picks ruining his confidence.

Regardless, 18 in 10.5 games isn't too bad.

I think Matt Barrows summed it up pretty well:

"Davis was probably safe when the team cut former PSU quarterback-turned-running back Michael Robinson. Singletary contemplated cutting Davis. But with only two QBs on the roster, Robinson would have been the de facto No. 3. Without him, the team needs Davis."

Well, I was able to predict that the 49ers were going to attempt to do this, but I am surprised that they signed another QB to be on the 53 man roster. I thought that they would do this and only have 2 QBs on the roster with MR being the emergency QB. What will be interesting now is to see if anyone does pick up Nate before the 49ers can put him on the practice squad like many on this thread predicted.

Some thoughts on this. I think it was ESPN who said that this move indicates that the 49ers are not sold on Carr as the #2 QB - I would have to agree. If you have Nate on the practice squad, I am not so sure you needed Smith. Also, apparently it was Singletary who wanted Troy Smith and told Baalke to get him. I don't know that we want our head coach looking over the release list of teams trying to find talent. Baalke should have come to Singletary and suggested the idea - not the other way around.

There might be a case to be made that by waiting until all the PS squads were named, the 49ers might be able to sneak Davis through waivers and back on the practice squad. Most teams carry one QB on the practice squad. I think that is a reach considering Brown is already on the squad.

It appears to me the 49ers believe Brown will be a more valuable addition to team practices this season than Davis. A practice squad/3rd string QB must be quick enough mentally to be able to run the scout team when needed. Since Davis was struggling to run the 49er offense, which he ostensibly studies for over a year, it is hard to believe he could serve a useful function running a different opponent's offense every week.

It isn't often that you get to have your theories tested in real life, but this is one of them. For everyone who said that putting Nate Davis on the practice squad was a crazy idea, I think it has been proven that it isn't crazy since the 49ers actually did it (doesn't mean that it is necessarily a good idea). And for those that said Davis would never clear waivers, that has been proven false, since he just in fact did clear waivers.

good call, fryet. I will officially eat my crow on this one. Though I will say that at the time you created this thread, I thought it was premature, that Sing's displeasure was a motivational tactic, and that Davis was still a fine #3 QB. I guess I didn't know the depth to which the coaches were unhappy with Davis. I'm still surprised, actually.

But, again, good call. I'm glad it worked out, that we can still develop Davis without giving him a roster spot. Maybe this will be a wakeup call for him, and, if not, then oh well.

We will not know if was a mistake until some more time passes. I won't be eating any crow until Alex Smith plays like an above average QB (as expected from a #1 overall pick) and has a successful regular season.
