Once again Davis showed that when the team is not lined up properly, or when the defense is set in a way that would negate the play call, he is helpless. He does not yet know enough to be able to adjust to anything outside the pre-call.

So Singletary will have to decide if another full year is what it will take, or if he will ever get it. Right now, Davis definitely has not earned a spot on the 53.

My prediction is that they will be able to get him back on the practice squad. Other teams will review his pre-season efforts and pass on him.

this he burned 2 timeouts and couldnt move the ball at all

i'll eat some crow on this. i think the PS isn't a bad option, and I am less concerned about losing him because of his increasingly poor performance this preseason (which means I think its less likely that another team will take him and also I care less if another team does).

Still, unless the team only wants to carry two QB's, I think there is no reason to put him on the PS. The 3rd QB spot is not a roster breaker. I still believe that all of Sing's comments about Davis were motivational tools. FWIW, I don't think he would be calling out the kid if he didn't want him to succeed.

Anyway, I think Davis still has potential and the team shouldn't give up on him after only two years. They knew he was a project when they drafted him. Two years is not enough time to make a judgment, IMO.
Maybe we can put him on the practice squad and sign Matt Leinart after his release from Arizona? Just a thought!

I'd say do it just so we could laugh at him for "dodging that bullet" back in the day...
I think it's funny how all of a sudden a lot of people on this board are saying "N. Davis isn't good and should be cut or placed on the practice squad".

We would have a better chance of getting A. Smith threw waivers than Davis! A. Smith has been given YEARS while Davis has shown more upside than Smith in just one year and two off seasons! No way would Davis go 1 TD with 11 int's if he started this whole year!

So if we are going to be harsh on QB's, we are targetting the wrong guy!

Nate Davis just happends to be playing like a 5th round pick at times, mean while A. Smith has played like a 5th - 7th round pick his whole career!

1st overall vs 5th rounder...?

He will be gone in an instant if the 9ers try to put him on the practice squad. Our hot and cold emotions with respect to his performance show how fickle we are as fans.

Uh....never mind. I think the board knows how I feel about Davis already.

Actually I don't MadDog. Can you post it again or a link where you said it before? I would also love to hear your pre-season thoughts now that pre-season is over.

I found the following post from MadDog last week:

"Singletary likes Davis, that is why he made these comments. At the same time, he essentially called him lazy, which is an ugly term, especially for a QB with a learning disability.

Once again, is it style or substance that we want for this team. Sure, Davis has a rocket arm, and makes a terrific play time and again. At the same time, he was not that accurate (less than 50% for the night), only threw for 50 yards outside of his one bomb, and would need about 16 time outs in a 60 minute game to avoid penalties.

He is simply not ready in 2010, and Singletary is getting ready to shut him down for the year (third string QB's run scout teams, not take snaps). Singletary is calling him out to use this down time from meaningful snaps to prepare for 2011. "

Yeah, hell NO to Davis on the PS. I say cut Carr, waive the other kid, start Smith leave Davis as the backup and let Robinson be the #3 QB and save a roster spot that way.

We don't need a #3 QB. If Smith AND Davis both get injured in the same game, then we're screwed anyway.

Carr is trash and the other kid hasn't even got on the field.

Our season rides on Smiths shoulders, (no pun intended) and Davis is our only option after that.

Bet big, win big...

Good idea... Smith goes down, and we have absolutely no chance of a worthwhile season.

"We would have a better chance of getting A. Smith threw waivers than Davis!"

WTF? How did this become Davis vs Smith?

That quote is about the silliest comment I have seen in a while. Even in NT where folks are suggesting to have evryone change positions and unseat the starters...

Smith struggled early in his career to be sure, but right now, he is running the 1st team offense very well.

Nate Davis on the other hand, is playing hit and miss, against the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th stringers from the other teams.

At this point there is simply no intelligent comparison. Period.

As for the patience shown for Smith early in his career, compared to the patience being shown for Davis, I have two things to add...

1. Davis is not a #1 overall draft pick who must be shown so much patience, because of a huge financial commitment year after year.

2. Many folks complained that Smith should not have been shown that much patience. Fair enough, if that is your view, to tell you the truth, I probably would have pulled the trigger on a vet a couple of years ago.

However, if you are going to say it was a mistake to show Smith that much patience, how can you now say it is ok to show that much patience to Davis?

You're talking out of both sides of your mouth...

Some people are just butt hurt because Davis has fizzled when given an opportunity to improve his stock. That is the only way that Glory would say something so utterly ridiculous. Just wait till they place him on the PS, if they do not cut him...people will be losing their minds.
