Put Nate Davis on the practice squad

Thanks for the reasoned response. In what I am proposing, the 49ers don't have a third QB on their roster. If they lost both QBs in the game, they would have to go to some emergency QB situation like MRob. Of course, if one QB got injured in a game, you would elevate Nate Davis from the practice squad to the 53 man roster the next game. Is there a risk having only 2 QB on your 53 man roster? Yes there is, but other teams have done it in the past, so it is not a totally crazy idea.

I do understand that the 3rd QB does not count against your 45 player game limit, but it does count against your 53 man roster, which may be a tough situation this year. If you have confidence that a player can make it to the practice squad, then it makes sense to place that player on the practice squad to save a player that would probably get snatched up. Most of the debate on this thread is on whether Nate Davis would make it to the practice squad or not.

still, that extra roster spot would be taken by a player who wouldn't play on game days either, and, I imagine, would be a player with practice squad eligibility, so why not just put that player on the PS, since the 3rd QB could, potentially, have a gameday role to fill?

Well, that other player would probably be viewed as more likely to be grabbed off the PS than Nate Davis. Personally, I expect either Boone or Curtis Taylor to be grabbed off the PS if they are placed there, since we have so much depth at those positions.

i'd like to keep Boone around, Taylor I couldn't care less about, but neither has a clear role with this team this season or the near future, and in the long-term they would be backups, anyway. However, QB is a position we're entirely unsettled at, and I see no reason to cut an obviously talented player at the most important position. If the team cuts Davis, not only do I think he wouldn't clear waivers--there are lots of other QB-needy teams who would take a flier on him--but I wouldn't even want to bother putting him on the PS. If he can't even be the team's 3rd QB this season, then he has no future here.

This is the exact reason why Sing shouldn't dis a player through the media. It is essentially character assasination. Whether it's true or not he will forever be branded this way, until proven otherwise. It sucks and is unfair to the player. We dont even know if this is true. Reports in the off season said he was always at the facility and learning with the QB coach. Maybe his disability is just too great to over come at this elite level? Look how long it took boy genius (Smith) to learn the play book.

Comment: The pecking order is set. The key question is whether the 49ers will stick with Davis after coach Mike Singletary publicly criticized the quarterback's offseason work habits. Singletary's comments were strong. Davis should be nervous. There's no excuse for a third-string player with a learning disability to fall short on effort/preparation. Seems to me the 49ers could use his roster spot for a player better prepared to help the team. They could probably always sign Davis to their practice squad. I wouldn't expect another team to add him to its 53-man roster.

Trade him to the Raiders, or the Steelers, cause somewhere in the league somebody would take him from us ala Kory Sheets. While we are at it trade Sims or Boone, the cowpukes and a few other teams have had plenty of O-line injuries, lets load up on picks for next year!

well, he's had as long as Davis and he's obviously farther along. Not sure what you're point there was.

"Until proven otherwise" is, I think, exactly why Singletary did it through the media. If he doesn't want to be branded as a guy who doesn't put in the work, then he'll work that much harder. The QB is in the limelight always. Davis was getting tons of love from the media and fans and Singletary came in and knocked him down a peg in everybody's eyes, letting Davis know on no uncertain terms where his head should be at.

Exactly. He should be cut. Since we have a pro-bowl starting QB who is in his last year of the contract - why keep a young QB who may have some potential.

We don't need a #3 QB. If Smith AND Davis both get injured in the same game, then we're screwed anyway.

Carr is trash and the other kid hasn't even got on the field.

Our season rides on Smiths shoulders, (no pun intended) and Davis is our only option after that.

Seriously? Smith has been a pro for six off seasons now. Diffrent offensive coaches or not, he better pick up things quicker than a 2nd year 5th round pick with a learning disability. In addition, intellect not instinct is Smiths game. I would expect him to have one up on Davis always, without it he is doomed.
Finally, Smith is clearly better than Davis at this point. There is no argument there.

As far as disciplining through the media, I disagree. However, there is no need to go into why. I've already posted that.
