So now that three games are down, what do you guys think are some of the tweaks we need to see in order for our team to succeed? Yes, we know we are playing vanilla offense/defense but certain things stand out, IMO.
1) Secondary still is a concern.
We see a dramatic drop off after our first unit step off from the field. The way the Raiders marched up against out secondary was telling. I am not going to say that it's nothing since this is only preseason, it's something that has been a problem for us for a while now... I hope I'm wrong in my assessment, but I am scared to see what happens if major injuries happen to our starters..
2) I am not sold on Carr.
Given, the guy is a backup but he did not show me much more than N. Davis. We were able to move the ball on the ground but nothing that stood out on the air...
3) ?????? (and more?)
The upside...
Our LB core is solid and I really think we are going to keep LaBoy and Briggs, they bring new weapons to our solid line. The solid play of the both of them will make it hard to release one or the other and with M. Lawson (methink) playing his last year with us, will be someone we will count on for the future...
Jean Francois has played superb and will be another good addition to our line.
The PR/KR seems like a problem of the past if Adams and Williams can produce.
What else????

Anthony Davis is a quick learner. Iupati is a stud in run block, needs to work on leverage in pass blocking, but he's a beast. Our O-Line has a lot of potential to finally be a pretty good unit.

Alex Smith has proven he is the QB. Now or never for him
Gore is still a beast, Westbrook looked good but already has a hamstring. Dixon is a great 3rd string RB to have, but i still think he needs to hit the holes quicker, but there's no question he can break and juke and defender
Norris has gotten his job handed to him. Way too slow and lost his feel for the game
O-line is young still, and there will be some struggles early on, but i think we hit the draft on the nose with Davis and Iupati. Hopefully Baas steps up and Boone can make the team
We finally have good receiver's. Lots of hate on morgan but he is a solid 2 and we have our deep threat in ginn. Z and kyle williams have tremendous upside and have already shown they've got skills. It's actually awesome that a receiver as skilled as Jason Hill might not make the team
Franklin hopefully comes as strong as he was last year, but if there was any doubt, RJF was just as incredible. Our Dline does not create enough pressure, but no team can run over us.
Haralson is going to start, but I seriously think all 3 backup OLB's are more talented than him (Brooks Briggs Laboy). I'm one of those who like Lawson because of his versatility, but we need a rusher on the opposite side of him and I hope laboy starts. We know what we have in Willis and Spikes. Bowman is built just like Willis it's incredible. If he can be half the player that Willis is we are set for the future
I'm worried about our secondary. I love that Goldson is a playmaker but he is AWFUL in coverage and michael lewis is slow as hell. our corner's arent good enough to stop a great passing game and I feel like this now has become the weakest spot on the whole TEAM.
We might finally have kick and punt returners in Ginn, Adams and Williams. I'm not worried anymore about our return game. Am i the only one thats worried about nedney now, though? I hope his injury isn't hurting him

Alex looks a million times better than he did this time last season.
We should keep five olb's
Or rookie lineman have gotten better every game.
Raye still pisses me off with some of his pay calling sometimes.
Norris sucks I wish we had a better option than him.
Zeigler could be a good receiver to have.

I think we do have a better option in Brit Miller. He looks good when they give him a chance to play and will only get better, seeing as how this is only his second year playing fullback. He's not the best right now, but better than Norris. As the original poster said, Norris' spot has been handed to him. I think he'll be filtered out during the season.

Great post, phatbutskinny.
I agree with just about everything you've said. I'll add, though, that Gore likes Norris. If Gore likes running behind him, then Norris is fine by me.
I think you're absolutely right about the secondary. Tonight we learned that we have a tough time against speedsters. That said, those were some serious speedsters and I'll wager that they'd give just about any secondary a tough time. That Murphy fellow has a serious set of wheels on him.
Like you, I'm not looking forward to the next round of cuts, especially at the LB and WR positions. I think you're right about Hill, he seems to be the guy on the hot seat.

I actually think that if Adams and Williams continue to hustle, Ginn will be an afterthought in the return game... Punt or kickoff...

We are going to give Brees/Rodgers quite the field day with sorry CB play like we have been showing (those are the games that have me the most worried). Unless the pass rush gets into a mad frenzy and tears through the respective offensive lines of the Saints/Packers, then we are f'd in the a.

He had a flat game, it happens to everyone. If that becomes a habit, I'll agree that there's reason to be concerned, but for the time being I see no reason for concern.
