Yeah I think it's the injuries that really did him in. Still, I'm surprised to see the level of interest that he's receiving. I think it's got to mean something.

I personally wish him the best and will be keeping an eye on him. We definitely shouldn't have been using him as a PR. I still don't know why we were doing so this past training camp.

As much as I love Singletary and appreciate having him as coach, I doubt some of his decisions with our personnel, and I think my greatest doubts are now with how we are using our receiver corps.

I don't agree that Jones was one of the most talented WRs on the team. He was a Scotty signing for WAY too much money. The coaches didn't want him to begin with. Seems the writing was on the wall, and pretty clearly written.

When eight or so teams want to see you the day after you're cut, it speaks volumes. And remember, we don't really have any distinguished receiving threats on this team after Vernon Davis and Michael Crabtree.

That is true, but we don't use a lot of multi-wide receiver sets either. I think THIS training camp, Jones was falling down the depth chart. With his outrageous salary, he wasn't worth keeping.

This could mean the coaches see something in Williams, or they think Hill and Zeigler bring similar skills and styles of play where Jones wasn't really needed. Could also mean that they expect Ginn to contribute more than initially thought. At any rate, Jones became expendable.
How long before Jason Hill is released and ends up in Seattle?

I think Williams can become a very effective slot receiver for us. He definitely brings a play-making element to the field that we were lacking before. Crabtree, Davis, Gore, Westbrook, Ginn, Williams... we have a nice selection of weapons on the team, but we'd be well served to find a quality #2 receiver. With the guys on the roster, I think that could be Jason Hill or Ziggy.
Saw that Brandon Jones signed with guess who, the Seachickens! McClueless sure love his players.
Gavintech...Worth is a relative term.

Zeigler has shown "worth" because he has shown the ability to return punts. Not at an All-Pro level (or even close), but in a pinch (since Williams will likely handle these duties when healthy), he can do this. On the other hand, Hill hasn't shown this ability. The ability to return punts has more of a premium than just simply being on special teams (like Hill). Please tell me you understand this concept.

Zeigler doesn't need to show he can return punts at a high level, since that's not his job...he simply has to show he can do it as a reserve player; show that he can reliably field a punt in the NFL and not fumble it away. That's all they're asking him to do as a backup PR. However, Hill hasn't shown this skill/ability AT ALL. Not even the ability to field a punt...I don't know if they don't trust Hill to do this, or he doesn't want to do it, I really don't know. However, I do know he isn't in the mix AT ALL as a punt returner. Zeigler is, and this gives him an edge (IMO).

I added the MM Tweet later:

Brandon Jones and Jason Hill are out. In my mind, Dominique Zeigler has clearly been among 49ers top 4 WRs in training camp.

That sounds pretty definitive, and MM is at practice a lot more than you or me (unless of course you're a coach or work at the facility).

From Barrows:

Quote:
This summer Jones appeared to be competing against Dominique Zeigler and Jason Hill for one of the last receiver spots on the roster. Zeigler today was praised by both offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye and quarterback Alex Smith (see the previous post).

Smith, meanwhile, also sang Zeigler's praises. Asked about receivers that have impressed him, Zeigler's was the first name Smith mentioned. "It seems that every time he goes in, he knows what he's doing," Smith said. "He doesn't let the game get too big. He just goes in there. He's a guy in the huddle who I think everyone has confidence in when he steps in." Smith also called Zeigler "strong handed," which means that when thrown the ball in traffic, more often than not Zeigler comes up with the reception.

We all knew that Jones was on his way out.
Too fragile and no production.

Hope he ends up with Seattle like Balmer and screws them up and takes up roster space and produces nada.
i hope willis gives brandon jones the brad smith treatment
I think Scotty is trying to sabatoge the seahawks by signing all our wash out players that he put on our team.
Brandon Jones travel update: Sea today, Vikings tomorrow, Raiders Sunday. Titans, Rams also interested. Minnesota suddenly in need of WRs...

ALMOST ALL THE DREADED SINS OF MCCLOUGHAN ARE CLEANSED!!!

Yaaaaaaaaay...

Ohhhhhhh that's right...

McCloughan signed Jones because Ike didn't say whether he was retiring or not.

In which case Bruce played too long.

Now if you go back and look at our Receivers AT THAT TIME...

The Jones signing was a necessity not a screw up by McCloughan.

It's funny how many people consider this a screwup. What happens if Bruce DID retire at that time?

Yeah Jones got injured. But lets take away every Bruce catch from last season. How're we looking now? Especially before Smith took the Offense over?

I'll never say that Jones did much if anything for us but you can't blame McCloughan for going out and signing the guy. If you can submit your resume where your mouth is.

It is stupid however for Jones to sign with Seattle if he did. They have quite a few Receivers last I checked. That may be a career ending move if he can't catch on with them by the end of Preseason.

You can stop right there. HE HAS NOT. He's shown that he's no better than anyone would be. He's shown absolutely nothing to prove any worth what-so-ever. He's proved that he can't judge the ball and muffs them when they come down for two preseasons. Just because they want him to good at it, doesn't mean he's shown anything to give the idea he will be.
