Here's the real bummer.
The 49ers' Kentwan Balmer hasn't paid the dividends of the five other current defensive ends taken in the top 50 in the 2008 draft:
-- Chris Long, 2nd pick, St. Louis: 83 combined tackles, 9.0 assists in 32 games
-- Derrick Harvey, 8th pick, Jacksonville: 76 combined tackles, 5.5 sacks in 32 games
-- Lawrence Jackson, 28th pick, Seattle: 61 combined tackles, 6.5 sacks in 32 games
-- Kentwan Balmer, 29th pick, 49ers: 19 combined tackles, no sacks in 27 games.
-- Phillip Merling, 32nd pick, Miami: 59 combined tackles, 3.5 sacks in 32 games.
-- Calais Campbell, 50th pick, Arizona: 76 combined tackles, 7.0 sacks in 32 games
He needs the Niners more than they need him. He's playing the fool now.
This entire matter is being overblown. In the last half of last season, prior to injury, he was a very able backup to Smith/Sop. He did his job. There was no drop-off. The fact he hasn't turned into Reggie White incarnate is no reason to throw him under the bus.

And who would you guys want Balmer to replace? Justin Smith? Soapoaga? Franklin? Really why do you want him to replace these guys? With these three, we have a top 5 D unit here. Why do we want to mess up that chemistry?
Soapoaga. I get what your saying, but we could use some more playmaking at LE.
Soapoaga's role is not to make plays. His role is to take on blockers, so the LB's make plays. He has been doing that well for three years now.

The bottom line still remains that he is a first round pick playing like a 7th round pick. I personally wouldn't mind seeing the team cut him since it is obvious he is not going to ever break the starting rotation. The guy just doesn't seem to get it.

Your point about who he plays behind is taken but he is playing a fool now. I agree he gave us some depth. It's Dumb move to get on the wrong side of Singletary.

The 49ers are stretching before practice. Kentwan Balmer is not on the field.

Kentwan Balmer is still an unexcused absence.

I get it. That role is not going to make a ton of sacks. But Smith and Franklin make plays, and they have similar roles. All I was saying is that it would be nice if we had a LE that could take up blockers and make a plays here and there.

It sure does make the decision making easy for the 49ers when a struggling player decides to quit on the team.

Chris Long has 9 sacks not 9 assists.

Confirmation: 49ers have booked flight for rookie free-agent DE Will Tukuafu. He is expected to take Kentwan Balmer's spot on 80-man roster.

@baraiza How will Balmers situation play out financially? > That's why 49ers haven't just cut him. They're looking at their options.
