Gotten better players.

Poor cock management.

Honestly, how would any of us know what he's done specifically to become a better coach? We can observe his actions and compare them to previous years, but that's about it.

I was about to say this same thing..

I mean really. The dude is a great motivator, has great character and all that, but is he learning anything about time management? Has he learned more about the offense, or has he simply told Jimmy R to run the offense and spare him the details?

Trust me, he has spent time getting better. Progress is in this guys nature! He flew out here to have dinner/lunch to sit down with the great Bill Walsh and you think he is satisfied with his current abilities? He wants to be great at everything he does! He is the example, he is the motivator, and he will be a champion!

Trust me...

Don't know if to many people noticed but as the season progressed he settled down a lot more. Sing' may or may not have the fundamentals of the x's or o's of the game but he showed the ability to adapt. He's only been a head coach for what....A second season now. Patience......

He's prepared this team to be in every football game. If you look at the years before he was coach, we had no chance and you could tell. Last year we were in most games even vs. the really good teams. Something you can't say when Nolan was coaching.

Not true, we came out very flat against Houston coming out of our Bye week and were down 21-0 before we could blink. Also with an extra 3 days to prepare against Green Bay, we once again did nothing to benefit us with the extra time off and fell behind in that game very big early on. Also against the Falcons, we just looked flat and outcoached for the whole game.

But that being said, I am a Mike Singletary fan and I do think he will succeed as 49ers HC.

I'll give you the Falcon's game (that's why I said most), but we were in reach in the other games. Before coach Sing those games would have been blowouts, and we would not have been close. When I say prepared, I mean they were ready to play in any kind of game to make sure they did whatever it took to either get back in the game or beat an opponent they were supposed to beat.

all of those cases were blowouts...unfortunately some of our "comebacks" were just other teams playing clock management and we happened to "catch up" miraculously because they were playing prevent

I am glad Sing is our coach. If you compare him to Nolan then I believe Sing has done a better job in everything except selecting an Offensive Coordinator. Nolan chose among the best for the Niners. Sing is taking a chance on a guy that can barely stand up the whole practice.

I hope he doesnot get fired in the future because he let higher rated OC canidates leave without a contract and chose an old guy who only has two running plays in his book.
I think we'll know more once the regular season starts and a few games have been played.

Also, I don't know why Mike Nolan figures in these discussions. If someone is better than Mike Nolan, that doesn't automatically make someone a better coach.

Singletary has to do something positive in his own right, and take this team to the next level. I generally feel better in the last 1 1/2 seasons, but until we make the playoffs, it's all talk.
I actually think Singletary kinda sucks. White people can't say that because they will be considered racist.

If he was not so detail oriented, I would worry.

i agree. Sing has alot of football common sense, and while he might not be the best at clock management or play calling, he learns from his mistakes, which is HUGE for a coach.

a great coach doesnt even necessarily need to be good at those things as long as he surrounds himself with a good staff that can do that for him. its not his job to call the plays, just to manage the team and keep them on track. its almost better when a coach keeps it simple. how many coaches burned out trying to do everything?

weve improved in each stage of his time as HC, so until we regress, i dont think its fair to question him.
He's made some good coaching hires...Rathman, Solari, Brown, Mike Johnson to name a few. He's learned to trust his coordinators...he knows he's not the X's and O's coach many of his peers are. So, he compensates for that by confiding in his coaches...and, for the most part, they haven't let him down much. He also took on a much larger role in draft preparation this off-season...reportedly more than just about any other NFL head coach. Only time will tell, but on the surface it appears that commitment will pay off in some big ways, most notably in the form of a much-improved OL. There's no doubt, this draft will show his stamp on the team...he's much closer now to the team he really wants...tough, physical, run-when-you-want kind of offense, but also recognizing he's got talent in the passing game. He added Mays, Bowman, LaBoy, Paymah & James to an already good defense and girded up his ST's signficantly by acquiring Ginn, Kyle Williams and Vann in the KR game. In short, he recognized his team's major shortfalls and addressed them. CB is still a position of need...particularly if Clements isn't part of the 2011 equation, but I'd look for that to be addressed as opportunities arise.

The first example I can think of is when he gave up the "bloody their noses" with the running game approach in favor of the spread last season, when the former wasn't working.

So, it shows that he is open to change. Moreover, he is willing to make that change on the fly if it means winning a game. Did he draft for the power running game? Absolutely. It's what he knows. But the fact that he was willing to depart from it shows a ton. It means his ego didn't get in the way.

Agreed that his flexibility was unexpected. You know he hated to give up the smashmouth thing, even temporarily, but he did and he did it successfully.

This year will show it all, Smith, Raye, Sing have this year. If the team, which clearly should be better, regresses or is run oddly, then changes will eventually be made.
