every year alex had the chance to improve he has there is no reason to believe there will be a change in the trend especially if we get at least a ecent o line next year and he gets to wprk in same system for the first time
I think Smith will have an really good season, but the team around him must hold up their end of the bargain. Better blocking up front... fewer dropped passes... some consistency on scheme... if these areas improve? and the defense continues to do well enough? Smith will be a top 12 quarterback in 2010.

A veteran QB with his development long behind him can overcome some failures from OL, receivers, and scheme changes. A QB that is still developing generally can not. He will need help from his team to take the next step.

... and for those b*tching about another Smith thread... ever tried to just... oh, I don't know... skip over it?

Alex Smith is a nice guy. Big deal! He is a lousy qb and that's all that matters.

As they say, talk is cheap. Nice speeches don't impress me from anyone associated with the 49ers offense. How many 3rd downs did you guys convert last season? Thought so.

Please enlighten the board with his stats on 3rd downs please.

"how many 3rd downs did you guys convert last season?" WTF? You said that like you're a fan of another team.

No, I say that as a pissed off 49er fan. Their offense has stunk for the last several years. If you guys can't recognize that, then tough titty if it gets you mad at my comment.

And note that I never singled out Smith in my comment, and am talking about the whole offense.

Whenever we get warm thoughts about Smith's future, just remember what we have seen in the playoffs!

Mad skills, seemingly miles ahead of Smith's abilities.

And any QB here is going to have to take charge. Do you think Manning would even give Raye his phone number or turn on his helmet speaker?

Wait, I read from a very reliable source that he was the 13th best QB this year. I would hope better blocking up front, fewer dropped passes, and consistency on scheme would provide for more improvement than one spot. He's going to be top 5.

And another very reliable source told me that all the great QBs fail in the playoffs, and that this year's playoffs prove that fact. So, we don't want him to be great anyway. Because that would just mean he would fail.

I think SMith will have a decent statistical season but I dont envision him to being that leader that we need to be a consistent winner.

Oh... okay, well whatever he finished out as, I see a signifigant improvement so long as those other aspects do what is expected of them.

I know...risking a total ban here. Sorry for being so harsh.

And PS...really wasn't trying to rip Smith. There is just something disfunctional with how the 49ers run their offense, and it frustrates the hell out of me when I watch them over the course of the season.

Well at this point dont forget about the consistent winning of the TE's and WR's. Cuz dont forget when called upon to take the team on his back. When it was actually quoted once out of the whole season to do. What happened.

Gore fumble, then walker fumble or sumthin like that. Drove us down the field on each occasion just to have another offensive player f**k it up.

the game where he got the other team offsides at least 5 times with the hard count. He called the play at the line of scrimmage when he told Gore to go out instead of staying in to block. He called that audible on his own.

That pass to Gore that some called the catch number 2. and even to help out Davis with giving him that last TD when Smith could of run it in.

and overall it is fact that smith has played better every season behind center. And we talk about numbers and Smith numbers have beat out in 10 games a total that he had with 16 and a full season, so how can you not think he will pass for more TD's.

I just think if Alex continues to improve, and the WR's and TE's separate themselves from being good and become great when they catch ANY pass that comes in their area. Meaning if they get two hands on it, it should be caught, as the Goat once said.

So i say Alex continue to make the throws, we eliminate all the drops, and Gore gets us at least 80 to 100yds per game and at least 1 td from the running back. WE can do some real damage.

s**t and lets not forget the D, has to know how to just not make a stop for the entire game, then when we need key stops, give up big yardage or first downs.

So i say if the team as a whole eliminates some of the little things that led to just an 8-8 record then I feel we can at least get to 10-6.

Sorry oldman, I was just being a smartass, referring to another thread on the board with that 13th ranking.

I do think he'll improve. I'm concerned about how much improvement he'll make, and I'm concerned about how much he may need those other things to improve before he can improve himself. I'm of the thought that a good QB should help elevate the level of play of the other players (while fully understanding that a QB's production is tied to the quality of play around him), as opposed to the other players needing to elevate the play of the QB.

Regardless, those things do need to improve.

I am so glad FINALLY a thread about Alex Smith! I have been waiting and hoping for this day when somebody would start a thread about Alex, and now that day has come, I'm so excited I might just pee myself.... wait I think I did!
Mods do your stuff and merge this bad boy, hell merge all the Pro Alex threads and all the Anti-Alex threads into one mighty thread, so long and so vast it would be unreadable!

Oh come on why stop there? lets just have a new forum just for Smith Talk!

all u haters should just stay out of PRO smith threads so when he blooms as the player he is, ALL of you will have your foot in your mouth cause you dont kno nothing about talent, and furthermore when a player is mishandled like NOLAN did to him.. what more can u expect for a kid whith a s**tty coach and horrible o-line.. Do that math... smith made huge jumps this year and you still cant give him props 18 TOUCHDOWNS IN 10 GAMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GO NINERS 2010!!!!

I'm a 'Hater", dude I am marked down as supporting Alex as next years starter in many millions of similar threads! I am also down as hedging my bet just a little and taking a QB on day one next year.
I would hand Alex the starting role, cut Hill and make Davis fight it out with a rookie for the back-up job!

Neither of us are Smith haters... just commenting on the how much discussion is going on about him.

If he starts in 2010, i wish him the best, but dont b suprised we end up .500 or lower.

lol And don't be surprised if we go 14-2 either.

I cannot say how good Alex Smith is going to be but I can tell you he is a solid QB and anyone that disagrees just doesn't know that much about QB's. I want to see what he does with a good line in front of him and throwing lanes and another year under the same system. I don't know if a lot of you guys get this but the only reason we dink and dunk and run out of the gun is because our line was so inept at pass blocking.

First of all, Im not going to get into the whole 'I know more about football that you do debate' because we all know they dont go anywhere and tend to detract from the topic at hand - But Alex Smith cannot be considered solid. He is a fringe starter in this league that is incapable of operating an offense from under center; he is extremely inconsistent in terms of accuracy, possesses average arm strength, and below-average pocket presence.

I will admit that his performance out of the spread last year was impressive at times, but the fact that he could only put those numbers up out of the shotgun almost nullifies the achievement completely in my book.

I honestly hope that he is able to prove me wrong this year, but unless he demonstrates the ability to move this offense out of pro-style sets, he is not going to make it in this league, and definitely not on a team coached by Mike Singletary.

Lets see what he does with a better line. Then we'll know, not think, that he is only one dimensional and regardless of protection or coordinators he simply can't get it done.

I am giving him through the end of the 2010. He is progressing, but a little too slow. I hope with a full season as the starter and with the continued improvement of Davis and Crabtree he will get us to the play-offs.
