Justin Smith is the team MVP

I think Justin Smith had a great season and I think our Dline as a whole, Franklin and Sop, had a great season.

Just another example why the pro bowl game is a joke

yeah but if you watch actual card games, you know that dockett is a monster. he was the only guy out there being a pain in the ass on that monday night game we had against them

all Dockett did is record 7 sacks, which is why hes in the pro bowl. Smith went from 2 sacks to 6 in the final game, after the voting. dockett just plays on a playoff team and people know his name.
He had a great year and the best performance over the season since the bryant young days but Willis is the MVP of the team. His play has gotten better every year and he still has room to improve.

Willis couldnt have had the season he did without Smith though. I think as highly of Willis as anyone on this board, but its really hard to say Justin Smith wasnt the reason this D made such a big leap this year. Smith occupied the blockers that allowed Willis to get in unblocked and make plays.

I agree but the whole Dline stepped it up not just smith this year, also remember that Willis has shown the ability to make plays without having a great Dline before. IMO it is just that Willis just made play after play after play through the air or the ground. I just have him rated a little higher than smith but there is no doubt that Smith was probably the best 3-4 DE this year.
COW BOOOY
The guy plays way above his abilities. We need more of his type of player on offense.
The type of guy that shows up to work, does a damn good job, heads home unnoticed..Bryant Young replica

Cowboy!!! Thank You!
He's an All Day Sucker
Um well outside of Patrick Willis then probably.

just to put this in perspective, pro football focus does a stat ranking system that combines every important facet to a players game, per position, and comes up with a number that represents just how good overall that player was in a single season.

Justin Smith came out of 2009 with a "40.0" score. which is the HIGHEST score of ANY player at ANY position in the entire NFL this season outside the position of QB. these are the top 10 non-QB scores from the entire NFL:

1. Justin Smith 40.0

2. Joe Thomas 35.2

3. Patrick Willis 32.6

4. Dwight Freeney 32.4

5. Lamarr Woodley 31.0

6. DeMarcus Ware 30.6

7. Jahri Evans 29.4

8. Darelle Revis 28.5

9. Nick Mangold 28.0

10. Trent Cole 27.8

and yes, pro football focus is a legit, purely statistical and fact based web team that painstakingly records all NFL stats and numbers.

TWO of the top THREE players play on the 49ers defense! thats insane. there IS hope for this team guys.

WOW! What a great signing J.Smith was! IMO he is the best all around DL in the entire NFL. Not just DE but entire DL regardless of whether your talking 3-4 or 4-3. He benefitted alot by Nolan leaving, Sing let him play his position and he's the best at it.

This might be the worst statistical invention that I have ever seen, but kudos to J. Smith, he deserves it.
Very Good read... Keep it up

ive been contemplating buying a Justin Smith jersey as my next one. already have Wilis, Gore, Crabtree, and Alex Smith. its either going to be VD, Justin Smith, or Manny Lawson.

yes. i actually have all 3 of them. i got manny the year he was coming back from the ACL, justin smith and joe staley last year. i have a gore knock off, a willis tweener:.

actually the only questionable jersey i have is VD's, but i always sport the fatties smith/staley and they are last years throwbacks.

I will say for me it's between Franklin and Smith with Smith holding the lead...

BY A MILE.

No in all seriousness now, AF stuffing the Gap and clogging the Running Lanes helped Smith get more shots at the QB.

Personally if I could not choose I would just give the thing to the Unit. Cause one guy stepping up one week helped his unit and that didn't just go for one guy it was all over that side of the field. Arizona game? We al know who the MVP of the Defense was that game. Goldson was all OVER them. Almost sacked Warner twice caused 2 Fumbles and I believe he got and INT too?

DaShon is DaMan that day.

This is going to be one truly scary Defense for the next few years.

But I'm glad that people got to see what a motor JSmith has. Guy was almost unstoppable this season.

~Ceadder

You are right Ceadderman. It would be hard to pick which individual on the line was truly MVP. All I know is this, I've heard many times mentioned this season that we had one of the best if not best 3-4 D-lines in the league - so give them all collective props, IMO.
